Opening
Before Ignite 157 is broadcast live from the Joyce Center in South Bend, Indiana, the fans in attendance and those watching at home are greeted to a splendid highlight reel of Justice 5. The memorable moments from that night in Boston include Scarlet becoming a four-time NEW Trans-Atlantic Champion, ending Al Envy's incredible reign in the process, Jake Youngblood collecting the Golden Contract Briefcase in the Green Monster Match to the surprise of many, Hazard retaining the NEW X-Core Championship against Ryan Pugh in an Insane Iron Man Match, Valora defeating Cera in a Torture Chamber Match, Nocturnal burying Johnny Stylez alive in their Six Feet Deep encounter, and Matt Slater beating Hunter Valentyne after four years of feuding to capture the NEW World Heavyweight Championship. However, the footage ends with an unsettling montage of Bobby Backdoor, Last Chance, Jason Scene, Tha Joka, Aurora Deadwood and Dynamite Davey Dynamo, who also won the NEW Television Championship during the event, destroying United after Slater's monumental victory, sending the crowd home wondering what the backlash will be going into Ignite 157, and what the group's mysterious motives are for orchestrating such a heinous attack.
After the video package, the intro sequence for Ignite plays, resulting in a pyrotechnics display that invigorates the vocally-strong crowd in South Bend. The fans show off their signs as the cameras survey the arena. Eventually, one lone cameraman shows Jill Matthews and Vince Walters at ringside. Both are dressed in their regular attire again, and Jill greets the masses with a warm smile.
Jill Matthews: Welcome ladies and gentleman to another edition of Ignite! I'm Jill Matthews alongside Vince Walters, and we are starting a new calendar year for NEW after the glorious spectacle that was Justice 5!
Vince Walters: It's just a pity you're not wearing that revealing dress again. There should be a rule for you to wear that every week!
Jill Matthews: I'm ... flattered, Vince, but I think we should refrain from talking about my clothes.
Vince Walters: Can we talk about it later?
Jill Matthews: ... No. Anyway ladies and gentleman, Justice 5 has been and gone, and what a historical event it was!
Vince Walters: New champions were crowned, rivalries were finalized, and I still can't believe that Johnny got buried alive! I've not heard from him since!
Jill Matthews: I don't think he talked to you much anyway. Nonetheless, emotions are running wild coming into this event ... none more so than the collective emotions of United.
Vince Walters: Fuck United!
Jill Matthews: Thanks for that professional comment, Vince. But also, I think we'll be getting an update on Reya Serra after she was electrocuted at Justice 5. I hope she's doing well after that bizarre accident.
Vince Walters: Maybe she'll come back as a zombie! That'll be interesting...
Jill simply stares at Vince before rolling her eyes, doing so as "Long Forgotten Sons" by Rise Against plays throughout the Joyce Center. The crowd explode with cheers as the NEW World Heavyweight Champion walks out slowly, looking around at the crowd as he rests the title on his shoulder. With a serious expression, Matt Slater grasps the title carefully and holds it aloft, remaining on the stage as the crowd cheer loudly. After this victorious gesture, Slater starts to walk towards the ring, continuing to look intense as he does so.
Jill Matthews: And here comes the man who defeated Hunter Valentyne in the Main Event of Justice 5 to become the NEW World Heavyweight Champion!
Vince Walters: I still can't believe it! Slater made Hunter pass out with the Zero Tolerance when they were tied a fall a piece, and ... and ... this is awful!
Jill Matthews: After four years of fighting across a few different promotions, Slater finally put an end to his rivalry with Hunter Valentyne in a Two Falls of Honor Match. It was brutal, it was intense, and it truly delivered!
Slater gets onto the apron and then mounts the nearest turnbuckle, raising the championship up again as the crowd cheer loudly. Their positive reception doesn't make Slater smile though. He is still angry about what happened to him at the end of Justice 5, and what happened to his allies in United.
Jill Matthews: But as you can see from Slater's expression, Justice 5 did not end on a happy note. Moments after Slater started to celebrate his victory, Bobby Backdoor came into the ring...
Vince Walters: I think everyone knows what happened, Jill!
Jill Matthews: Are you that naive to think that everyone in the entire world knows what happened?
Vince Walters: ... Yes?
Slater collects a microphone from ringside as his theme fades away. The only sounds being made are the fans cheering constantly, resulting in a "Slater" chant that flows throughout the building. Slater stands in the middle of the ring and looks around at the crowd, keeping the World Heavyweight Championship on his shoulder as he listens.
Jill Matthews: Slater's mission to restore honor and prosperity in New Edge Wrestling alongside United has started to come to fruition. He won the Terrordome at Kamikaze to earn his shot, and now he is the World Heavyweight Champion.
Vince Walters: I'd rather here you speak than Slater, but I think he's about to!
As the cheers and chants lessen in volume, Slater raises the microphone to his lips.
Matt Slater: If you're expecting a victory speech ... then I'm sorry to disappoint you.
Vince Walters: Oh thank God!
Appearing disgruntled, Slater surveys the audience before he continues.
Matt Slater: Instead, there is something else that I want to get off my chest.
Vince Walters: Uh oh...
Matt Slater: You see, after I finally defeated Hunter Valentyne to capture the World Heavyweight Championship, a quest that took me over four years to achieve, and after I earned my induction into the NEW Hall of Fame...
The crowd in South Bend applaud respectfully, congratulating Slater on his legendary accomplishments.
Matt Slater: ... Justice 5 didn't exactly end on a positive note for me. What should have been the greatest moment of my life was tarnished by a group of people that wanted to make a statement ... and they did it at my expense. But it wasn't just at my expense. Every single member of United was left bloodied and battered at the end of Justice 5, a sight that will be remembered for a long, long time.
The crowd murmur as Slater frowns in thought, remembering the visual images of United's attack after watching the replay to Justice 5.
Jill Matthews: It was a despicable act I'll never forget. That's for sure.
Matt Slater: Well if statements are going to be made ... then I have one of my own.
Momentarily glancing at the World Title on his shoulder, Slater savours his thoughts as the crowd lightly respond.
Matt Slater: When I came back to New Edge Wrestling earlier this year, I had one thing in mind, and that was to bring true prosperity and sportsmanship back to this organization. I have always worked to uphold those qualities to the best of my ability, and now, as the World Heavyweight Champion, I'm going to do the best I can to provide a brighter future for this company. I am going to represent each and every one of you the way a World Heavyweight Champion should, and I'm certain the rest of United agree with those motives.
The crowd cheer again, knowing that Slater will do everything he can to accomplish those goals.
Matt Slater: Now instead of the Styles Mafia trying to control everything, we have an entirely new group that are striving to accomplish a different goal. I'm not quite sure what that goal is ... but I'm not going to wait any longer to find out.
Expecting an intense confrontation, the crowd in South Bend start to shout and scream, supporting Slater and his honourable objective as he looks towards the stage.
Matt Slater: So Bobby Backdoor ... Last Chance ... Joka ... Jason Scene, Aurora Deadwood ... even you Davey...
Slater grimaces after uttering Davey's name, a man that betrayed United in the midst of the attack at the end of Justice 5. As he does so, he removes the World Heavyweight Championship from his shoulder, keeping it at his side in his hand as he concentrates on the stage.
Matt Slater: ... I want you all to come out here, and you're going to provide some answers. And that's not a request. That's a demand!
The crowd explode with cheers as Slater lowers the microphone, standing firm in the center of the ring.
Jill Matthews: Slater is calling them out, and he's on his own!
Vince Walters: I never thought Slater could be this stupid! He must have a death wish!
Jill Matthews: He's a proud man, Vince, but sometimes that pride that can work against him. I hate to admit it, but I think he might be making a mistake!
Vince Walters: He might be?!
With no sign of the group, Slater's infuriation grows. He starts to look around at the stands, thinking that the group will try to ambush him.
Matt Slater: Come out to this ring right now!
The crowd are starting to get restless, impatiently anticipating the group's arrival. Suddenly, the lights in the arena go out, plunging everything into darkness.
Vince Walters: Wait, what's going on now?
Jill Matthews: The lights have just gone out. I can't see a thing!
Vince Walters: I can't see your boobs, and they're not hard to miss!
The Big Screen comes to life with just static. The static seems to zoom back, revealing a television. A small blonde haired girl, Heather O'Rourke, sits looking at the television. She seems mesmerized by the static on her television. Craig T. Nelson and Jo Beth Williams are standing behind her. She slowly raises her hands and places them on the screen of the television.
Craig T. Nelson: Carol Anne, what is it, honey?
Jo Beth Williams: Baby, are you ok?
The girl slowly turns her head back to them.
Heather O'Rourke (Carol Anne): They're here..
Deep shadow covers the screen.
Parts of the screen slowly lighten up to reveal what appears to be a silhouette.
In darkness, a blood curdling cacophony: the squeal of unoiled winches, the rasp of hooks and razors being sharpened; and worse, and the howl of tormented souls. Above this din one particular victim yells for mercy with a mixture of tears and roars of rage.
Now the Screen is awash in people, crawling, scrabbling, and shambling masses, some of them moving in reverse. A sound like moaning accompanies them. The picture switches again. A figure stands upon a shore, its face shrouded. It points accusingly, not towards the screen, but at something unseen off to one side. The insect-like screeching sounds louder.
On the screen is a close up of an eye. Inside that eye is the sentence reflected in reverse: "Your Worse Nightmare Is Back." The eye blinks once, twice. The word remains. "Narcissistic Cannibal" by Korn starts blaring out. Suddenly the lights go out. Suddenly the screen seems to clear, what looks like the moon appears on it.
It's not the moon at all, they realize. The shape is round like a full moon, but it seems to be made up of thin ribbons of cloud streaking against a night sky. And there's a face, we see, a face hidden in shadows, looking down from above. The picture has a grainy look to it as it changes. The scene is of a young girl sitting in a chair in a straight-jacket behind her stood to her left is a Doctor. The nerve-wracking grating as if of some giant metallic insect sounds in the background, but the young girl doesn't seem to notice. The Doctor stood to the left of the girl suddenly changes position from the left part of the picture, to the right. Almost instantly the Doctor returns to its original position, but in that one moment in its changed location we see a huge man with a shadow covering his face. The young girl turns towards where that figure stood, and smiles.
The screen next becomes a twitching, undulating impenetrable sea of the kanji characters used in the Japanese language. The viewers can pick out only a few things recognizable in English:
"Run whilst you still can."
On the big screen is a close up on inhuman, alien-looking eye. Inside that eye a single word is reflected in reverse: Pain. The eye blinks once, twice. The word remains. It changes and we see a long shot of an outdoor, swimming pool, the man with the shadows for a face is swimming in it and the straight jacket young girl sits by it.
The arena drops into darkness as this weird movie is playing out on the big screen. Suddenly pyros explode in front of the big screen, as the fans literally jump from the shock. The roving arm of the overhead camera picks out people in the crowd. As they realize there on the screen they hold the signs higher. Orange strobes cut around the arena as blue smoke billows from underneath the grating on the ramp way. The whole entranceway bursts into flames. A figure can be seen on the other side of the flames; he is dressed in black robes with the hood pulled up.
He pulls the hood down, dropping the robes to the floor revealing to the crowd who he is. It is none other than the Sadistic Bastard, Nocturnal. Nocturnal then raises his massive arms above his head in an age-old gesture of defiance and supremacy as phosphorus flames blast in twin columns to the heavens behind him.
Vince Walters: What’s he doing out here? He shouldn’t really be able to walk after what he and Johnny Stylez got up to at Justice 5.
Jill Matthews: Maybe he wants to congratulate the new champion?
Vince Walters: Does that seem likely?
Jill Matthews: ... No.
Nocturnal stands motionless, emotionless. Then on some unseen signal he launches himself forward into the flames without a seconds thought, his dark eyes glaze over. He stands with his arms outstretched like a crucifixion; Flames lick around his head and engulfs his clothing, yet he emerges from the other side unscathed.
Laughing sadistically as he slowly walks towards the ring ignoring the cheers from the crowd. Nocturnal, dressed in an "Unstable" T-shirt. As he passes a camera he stops and looks directly into the lens. He has the look of an arrogant champion on his face.
Nocturnal climbs between the ropes and strides to the far side of the ring ignoring Matt Slater who just stands in the center of the ring, focusing on the Sadistic Bastard. Climbing the turnbuckle he lifts his arms up high to the cheers of the crowd. Flash bulbs blink from all around the arena catching this moment in history.
He gets down and looks around he nods his head and leans over the ropes and grabs a microphone off one of the ring crew. He returns to the centre of the ring tapping the microphone making sure it is working; He looks around the arena awaiting the people to be quiet so he can talk.
Vince Walters: What’s he going to do?
Jill Matthews: Yeah, the Sadistic Bastard is back in the house he helped build.
Vince Walters: This isn’t the Nocturnal show. This is the House of Jesse Styles. And at the moment we have Matt Slater as the ambassador for it.
Jill Matthews: What?
Vince Walters: They're still cheering for him Jill?
Jill Matthews: Nocturnal is a fan favourite at the moment after what he did to Johnny Stylez, go figure. Anyone that is a bit different it seems.
Nocturnal walks around the ring for a few seconds before turning to Slater and smiling.
A cheer goes up.
Nocturnal: So I should congratulate you on winning that gold strap Matthew. I should say that well done you’ve joined the elite class that have reached the pinnacle of this sport. People that have won that gold strap are the best in this industry and should be given the respect that it deserves. But it’s nothing these days to be honest. That strap has lost all its prestige since I lost it to Colt. You see Slater, that gold strap has been whored out by the NEW management on those people since I had it as a way to try and control what it’s top guy is. Bit like someone else I know. Hey Aurora.
The fans go crazy as Nocturnal approaches the camera and blows a kiss across the world. A cheer goes up around the arena.
Nocturnal: You see Matthew with people like Colt and Hunter holding that belt before you it seems like the belt was being passed around like some cheap ass hooker. But you should be used to that right, Matthew? You’re probably wondering why I am out here right?
Vince Walters: We are.
Jill Matthews: Did he call Aurora a whore?
Nocturnal walks around the ring letting people digest what he said. Slater just stares at him.
Nocturnal: Oh come on Matthew, smile for us. Do you smile? You’re not a robot right? You’ve not been replaced by a cybernetic life form? Or maybe just a goddamn Vulcan? This is New Edge Wrestling for fuck sake and this is where Nocturnal says what he wants and does what he wants.
He looks up at the Justice logo hanging by the side of the NEW-Tron. A sinister smile crosses his lips.
Nocturnal: Did you see what I did to Johnny Stylez at Justice? I buried that has-been six feet deep. I beat him and his sidekick in our last match……Oh wait, you were there too were you not? You and your little United buddy Kronnan? It’s where I took your gold tag titles right Matthew?
He looks into the camera and smiles.
Nocturnal: So I digress when I talk about that match. Where was I? Oh yeah I was talking about utterly destroying Johnny Stylez. Now that was fun, real fun. How this place has changed since we both made our debut here? Me and you joined NEW approximately at the same time when people like Roger Wright and XXX ran this place. Where are they now? Roger’s in the twilight of his career facing off against the new guys whilst XXX has retired. Rumours of him coming out of retirement are greatly exaggerated. He pawned his NEW World Heavyweight title belt and should be okay for beer for a couple of days.
He pauses and then looks at a fictional watch on his wrist.
Nocturnal: We are the future of this promotion Matthew.
The crowd cheers.
Nocturnal: We’ve managed to stay away from each other, Matthew, but I know it’s bound to happen sometime soon as you’ve got my belt. You see the last time we met one on one in a match, you actually mutilated my sister Emily, and I’ve not forgiven you for that. She still isn’t one hundred per cent and I blame you.
He walks around the ring.
Nocturnal: You may want to hide behind your little United fraternity, but you know Unstable have their eyes firmly set on you. Look at Valora. She’s gunning for you. Nobody is scarier when motivated Matthew. Just ask Hunter. Those two had an epic feud which nearly killed this promotion.
He pauses trying to remember something.
Nocturnal: Unstable have gotten serious with their stuff now we’ve got your former friend Vanessa in it. So you better get with the program or get gone. People think that we are just a group of likeminded loners joined together solely as protection from the Styles Mafia and other groups of misfits and miscreants. But we are so much more.
He smiles as he looks out at the crowd.
Nocturnal: So Matthew what do I do? What do I do?
The crowd cheer.
Nocturnal: So what do I do? What will I do? Decisions, decisions...
Nocturnal mules over his thoughts as Slater approaches him, getting face-to-face with a man that will going after his title soon enough.
Matt Slater: You sure do talk a lot. You think I don't know what's happened to this belt recently?
Slater glances at the World Title momentarily.
Matt Slater: This World Title has been the subject of controversy in recent times ... but not anymore. I'm going to redefine what it means to be a World Heavyweight Champion, and I believe I can amend the damage that has been done to this by the likes of Colt and Hunter Valentyne.
The crowd cheer Slater's intentions.
Matt Slater: And you say I hide behind my United allies? I've always been on the front line, fighting for what I believe in. I survived the Terrordome. I've survived every challenge that Jesse Styles has put in my way, and now I'm the World Heavyweight Champion.
The crowd cheer loudly once again.
Matt Slater: As far as our history goes, including what I did to Emily? I'm fully aware of my malicious mistakes. I've already accepted my irresponsibility's, and I've properly atoned for those callous actions. I don't fault you for holding a grudge ... but as for you getting "your" belt back? I have only one thing to say about that.
Slater steps closer to Noc, holding the belt up at his side to shoulder level.
Matt Slater: Whenever you decide to step up and fight to take this belt from me ... I'll be ready and willing to keep this title around my waist.
Nocturnal studies Slater as the crowd cheer, watching both men stare intently at one another. But just as Slater concludes his sentence, "Hurt" by Johnny Cash plays from the speakers, causing the crowd to boo extremely loudly. Slater and Nocturnal turn their attentions to the stage as Jesse Styles walks out, still sporting a few bruises after his war against Kronin at Justice 5. He has a microphone in his hand, and he looks incredibly pissed off with how things have gone since the biggest show of the year.
Vince Walters: The boss is here! I hope he's feeling okay!
Jill Matthews: Even if he is, he deserved what he got at Justice 5 at the hands of Kronin. But I don't like the look on his face right now. Something tells me we're going to be in store for a rant from our controversial owner!
Once Jesse's theme fades, he doesn't waste any time letting the crowd know what's on his mind.
Jesse Styles: As you can tell, I'm not in the best of moods right now.
The crowd chant "Asshole!" as Jesse simmers, trying not to lose his temper as he rubs his head with his hand.
Jesse Styles: I should be fucking happy. Do you know why I should be happy? Because millions of people around the world ordered Justice 5 last week, and those figures have made me a whole lot richer! The Styles Mafia might have lost the majority of their matches at the biggest PPV of the year ... myself included ... but more money in my pocket means more money in the Mafia's pocket, which still makes us the wealthiest, most powerful group in New Edge Wrestling today!
The crowd boo loudly at Jesse's blatant arrogance, something that Jesse doesn't acknowledge as he concentrates on the two men in the ring.
Jesse Styles: But the fact is, a lot of things have been bothering me lately, and one of them is seeing you with that World Heavyweight Championship on your shoulder!
Jesse directs a confrontational finger towards Slater, a gesture that the crowd react to with loud cheers.
Jesse Styles: Another is knowing that you buried my cousin alive, and I haven't seen or spoken with him since!
The crowd cheer again as Nocturnal smirks wickedly, remembering what he did to Johnny at Justice 5.
Jesse Styles: Unfortunately I can't change history, but if I had that power, I'd change things that are on my mind in a heart-beat!
Vince Walters: I would too! I agree with the boss!
Jesse Styles: With that being said ... the reason why I'm out here has nothing to do with money. In fact, it has everything to do with what I just mentioned, and that's the World Heavyweight Championship. Nocturnal, despite how much I hate your guts, you did earn a World Title Match against Matt Slater at Justice 5, and you seem to be ready to use that shot. Well I'm out here to inform you that your shot will be used for a World Heavyweight Championship Match in two weeks time at Ignite 159!
The crowd cheer the announcement of this match, an announcement that causes Nocturnal to smirk again and nod. Slater simply concentrates on the corruptive owner as he holds the World Championship at his side.
Jesse Styles: The winner of that match will then go on to face Valora at Annihilation ... and you both better pray that you make it to that event in one piece! But I will say this. It will be interesting to see if Nocturnal can surpass his former glory instead of being viewed as a one-hit wonder, and if Slater can actually defend that belt he's worked so hard to win before it's violently ripped away from his grasp!
The crowd boo loudly, expecting Jesse to leave right then and there. However, he doesn't appear to be finished.
Jesse Styles: Now as far as Bobby Backdoor is concerned...
Jesse looks down momentarily as the crowd murmur.
Jesse Styles: ... Well, you'll be hearing what I have to say about him and his group later tonight. I know they're not in this building yet, but once they arrive ... I'm going to set some things straight with the whole fucking lot of them!
Still pissed off, Jesse walks away as "Hurt" by Johnny Cash plays again, leaving Slater and Nocturnal alone in the ring.
Vince Walters: Did you hear that?! Nocturnal is going to get his World Title shot against Slater in two weeks!
Jill Matthews: And Jesse isn't exactly happy about that, and why should he be? The Styles Mafia were practically humiliated at Justice 5, and he even has the FBI on his...
Suddenly Nocturnal catches Slater with a MELTDOWN in the middle of the ring, taking the NEW World Heavyweight Champion by surprise and abruptly ending Jill Matthews' comments!
Jill Matthews: What the hell?! Nocturnal just laid out our World Champion with a Meltdown!
Vince Walters: That was a warning, Jill! It was a warning of things to come for Matt Slater!
Nocturnal glances at Slater and the prestigious title as the crowd boo loudly, continuing to do so as Nocturnal smirks and leaves the ring. He walks towards the stage as he smiles sadistically, knowing he's just left an impression on Slater that will remain in his mind before their encounter.
Jill Matthews: There is a lot of animosity between those two men, and it's going to get more intense before their match for the World Title in two weeks!
Vince Walters: And we could be seeing Nocturnal as the next NEW Champion!
Once Nocturnal reaches the stage, he looks back at Slater from afar, watching the champion move around slightly on the canvas. Suddenly, as the Sadistic Bastard is about to leave for good, "Bulls On Parade" by Rage Against The Machine plays, causing Nocturnal to look around in confusion.
Jill Matthews: Wait a minute! This can't be...?!
Vince Walters: What?!
Jake Youngblood then storms out, holding on to the Golden Contract Briefcase. Nocturnal glares at Youngblood as he ventures onto the stage, a glare that leads to both men confronting one another. The crowd boo relentlessly as the Nocturnal glares at his former protégé and Unstable partner, knowing that Youngblood is going to try and steal the World Championship away from Slater while he's in a bad condition!
Vince Walters: I think Youngblood's going to cash in already!
Jill Matthews: He has a Youngblood Championship Match against Dixie Clement later tonight as well! He could be a double champion by the end of the night if he cashes in now!
Vince Walters: If Youngblood leaves this building with both belts, his career will sky-rocket! But I just want him to get that belt off Slater while he still can!
Jill Matthews: But if he does cash in, how will this affect the World Title picture?! Slater is still down in the ring, and Youngblood is making his way towards him! Nocturnal is letting him do it!
With Nocturnal now departing the scene, Youngblood jogs towards the ring, keeping a tight hold of the Briefcase. The crowd are merciless as Youngblood stops at the apron, concentrating on a few fans who are insulting Youngblood.
Jill Matthews: The opportunistic Youngblood could make history here in a matter of seconds!
Vince Walters: But we need a referee!
Youngblood finishes exchanging insults with the fans and smiles, leaping onto the apron with his knees as he grabs a hold of the middle rope. But as he focuses on Slater again, he notices Slater staring back at him, infuriation plastered onto his face as he remains on the canvas, feeling his neck with his hand!
Jill Matthews: Slater's recovered from the Meltdown, and he knows Youngblood is there!
Youngblood remains knelt on the apron as he stares at Slater, not taking his eyes off the current champion.
Vince Walters: Is he going to cash in?!
With Slater seething, Youngblood shakes his head and slowly gets down from the apron. The crowd boo loudly as he hugs the briefcase at his chest, backing away from Slater as he remains silent.
Jill Matthews: I think Youngblood just changed his mind!
Vince Walters: He's being smart and cunning, Jill, traits I thought I'd never see in him! He's reminding Slater that there's more than just Nocturnal and Valora pursuing him. There is also the Golden Contract holder!
Jill Matthews: Well if Youngblood cashed in at that moment, he wouldn't have been able to cancel his shot. Once it's cashed in, he won't get a second chance! That briefcase can spell success or failure, and Jake has to be careful on how he uses his golden opportunity!
Youngblood finally disappears out of view as Slater struggles to get up, doing so as the show fades away into a thirty-second advertisement.
