A cool breeze carried off the mountain, rocking the small boat in the middle of the frigid lake from side to side. Two men in the boat sat relaxed, a fishing pole cast into the cold water. “Who wears a suit to go late night fishing?” The crop cut brunette asked as he fished into the cooler. “And where is the food? This damn thing is filled with nothing but beer.”
The man manning the rod and reel stretched his back, stood up and wiped the front of his well-tailored suit. “One day you may find that it is not enough to do what you love, but looking damn good while doing it makes it that much better.” The man checked the rod, and slipped back down into the chair on the boat and allowed his eyes to close a bit.
“Where is the damn food?” The close cropped brunette man asked while slamming the cooler’s lid closed. He rummaged into the bags and all over the boat coming up with zero on the food front. “All you brought was this high end import European beer!”
“We are here to catch the food, no need to pack it.” The man in the suit said as he checked the rod again.
“So you didn’t pack anything but beer?”
“Can’t catch beer!” The man in a suit replied as he yanked hard on the reel and began to bring the catch in. Minutes of fighting the fish led to the haul of a large catfish. As the fish dangled from the end of the line, the man in the suit unhooked it, gutted it and de boned it in a matter of minutes.
“Holy shit!” The brunette man replied. “That was freaking…” His voice trailed off in search of a word to finish his thought.
“Perfect?” The man in the suit replied with a smile on his face.
“I guess the only question left to ask is, how long till the fish is done?” The brunette man asked.
The man in the suit knelt down, pulled a hibachi grill out from the storage space on the boat and got the coals burning. In a matter of minutes it was the perfect temperature and the fish was cooking. “Just a few more minutes Sean.” The man said as he flipped the fillets of catfish over.
“Well it smells good Ryan.” Sean sat back in the chair and stared out across the lake at the tree riddles shore line. “I guess we can talk about the elephant in the room, and the reason I am here with you on this boat.”
Ryan pulled the fish off the grill and put one fillet on each of the two plates he had before him. Passing one plate to Sean, Ryan took a seat and cut a piece of the fish for himself and took a bite. “Those days are in the past Sean, that’s why you are here with me.”
Sean set the plate on his lap and took a deep breath. “So you called me out here to catch fish and tell me that you and I were not going to go back to our money making association we used to have? Have you gone straight?” Sean slipped the plate off of his lap and set it down on the floor of the boat.
“Don’t like the fish?” Ryan asked as he forked another bite of the fish into his mouth.
“I don’t like that you are going to leave a bunch of money on the table, for yourself and for me!” Sean stood up a hint of anger in the air. “Do you get it Ryan, you are best, and you have a chance to make millions, for me and you!” Sean huffed with anger.
“All the contracts I took, what did they have in common?” Ryan asked as he took another bite of the fish and leaned back casually in the chair on the boat.
“Rich assholes who cared about the money more than the people around them!” Sean huffed and then paused as he made the connection. “This is different.” Sean backed up a bit his hands instinctively going into the air.
“I met a man years ago, great man, German I think. Man did he tell the best stories about his time in the German military.” Ryan paused and kind of cocked his head to the side at Sean. “Thing is this man, nothing like me, and yet we had this great friendship that blossomed from a training exercise in San Diego.”
In a flash of speed, Ryan pulled the air gun from his suit jacket shot Sean and slipped the gun into his jacket. Sean sank down to his knees and leaned forward against the back of the chair in front of him. “My face…” The man halfheartedly was able to say.
“So where was I?” Ryan took another bit of his fish and tossed the plate and remaining fish into the coals. “Yes that’s right, San Diego.” Ryan leaned forward and starred into the blank eyes of his drugged friend.
“YOUR JOB IS TO TAKE OUT ALL THE TARGETS IN THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY POSSIBLE. YOU WILL BE TIMED, AND YOU WILL BE PAIRED WITH A MEMBER OF THE GERMAN MILITARY. THE POINT IS TO SHOW THAT YOU CAN PERFROM IN THE MOST UN IDEAL OF SITUATIONS!!!” The Drill Instructor yelled at the top of his lungs.
“ELIAS AND REINHARDT! YOU TWO ARE UP!” The two men stepped forward, checked their weapons and set forth into the small building that would be their drill.
Both men slipped through the door, cut their corners and stayed low and steady. They made their way down the first hall, turned the corner and Kronin dropped the first target without hesitation, and swung to take down the second that popped up. Ryan didn’t miss a beat as he winked at Kronin, taking down the third target before for the laser could light up Kronin.
“Almost hit you!” Ryan said as he smiled at Kronin and moved down the hall towards the next room, Kronin followed, holding down the six as a target popped up and Kronin eliminated it without hesitation.
“You are welcome!” Kronin smirked as he whipped around and followed Ryan into the next room. The first target popped up and Ryan eliminated it quick. As the second popped up Kronin slid across the floor took out the target and popped up taking out the third target in the room before Ryan even reacted. “Keep up!” Kronin jested.
Ryan simply smiled, ran through the room and into the hallway, his arms out to his side a second weapon having been pulled form his holster, he destroyed the five targets that popped up in a matter of seconds and slipped into the next room, reloading on the move and taking out three more targets. “Coming?” Ryan yelled back down the hall.
Kronin came in from the door opposite Ryan with a smile on his face. “What are you still doing back here?” He asked with a smile. “House is clear!” He said now letting out a large laugh.
“GOOD WORK!” The drill instructor yelled as the two men emerged from the building. Both men looked at each other and smiled before returning to their line ups. “NOW THE NEXT GROUP IS UP AND YOU HAVE QUITE THE CHALLENGE TIME BEFORE YOU!”
Present day
“Honestly never thought I would make a friend in the Navy, much less a friend from another country, but that’s exactly what happened that day.” Ryan moved forward and leveled his head with Sean’s. “See the thing is Kronin wasn’t fond of the evil kinds of things I went on to do, even though I did them for what I think are morally high reasons.”
Ryan studied his friend and watched as the man let out a bit of drool. “Don’t take it personally Sean, but I am doing this for me, not for the way to hide while traveling the country.” Leaning down Ryan placed his hands on the man’s chin and raised his eyes to meet his own.
“So I will leave the decision to you.” Ryan watched as the man’s eyes frantically searched the area. “Will you be the kind of person I used to eliminate, or will you walk away from this boat when I land it, never to come around.” Ryan starred at the man for a moment.
Starring back at him, Sean’s eyes pleaded with Ryan for a way to answer the man’s question. Ryan smiled and starred for a moment before speaking again. “I can see the answer in your eyes.” Standing up, Ryan pulled a roll of tape off out of the storage area and went to work.
Minutes later the boat bounded over the lake heading for the shore. “I think this is the part where I am supposed to tell you that Devin Stone, the no talent ass clown I face this week has no chance. Of course you won’t be around for that so you don’t really care do you?” Ryan let out a laugh as the boat pulled up to the dock.
Ryan slipped off the boat, tied it and pulled the completely mummified looking taped up Sean off the boat. In the darkness Ryan dragged the man up the lawn towards the house. Rounding the back, Ryan opened the doors to the basement and pushed the mummy looking body down the stairs.
In the basement, Ryan set the completely taped body on a chair and removed the tape from Sean’s face, the man starring back at him struck with fear. “So in the movies they usually go on some sort of tirade about what is going to happen, and well I figure I should relate this to my future endeavors in the NEW. So I will practice my ability to talk trash on you!” Ryan smiled as he started pulling out tools for his body removal process.
“This week I have to face the big nasty.” Ryan laughed. “I know not exactly the kind of name that strikes fear into the hearts of men, especially a man like me. But then not many people know me as well as you know me.” Ryan winked as he unrolled the tools onto the table.
“So back to topic, Devin Stone is this giant in the industry, at least in his own mind. I mean he calls himself some crazy shit like the iconic icon or something.” Ryan shook his head and let out a laugh.
“Oh man I can’t do this anymore.” Shaking his head, sank down onto the chair at the end of a nearby table. “Who the hell really stands around and just talks shit about someone?” He half mused as he exhaled a deep breath. “Oh well, I guess for you it just sucked because it is the last thing that you will remember, if you remember anything at all when this over.”
Standing back up, Ryan grabbed the roll of tape and re-taped his once close associates face. Leaning down Ryan put his lips close to the man’s exposed ear. “Don’t worry, I will make you disappear so no one can find you.” And with that Ryan taped up the rest of the man’s head and went to work.
