Things were moving smooth, the four man team had infiltrated the compound and were now moving through the halls. Ryan held the point, while Kronin pulled up the Six. The group swung around a corner, the room they entered was empty, or so they thought. As Ryan checked the back of a couch a group laid fire from the closet. The Team hit the floor and returned fire, but the damage was done, two members of the team down, Ryan and Kronin left using a flipped over metal table for protection from the shots.
Both men hunkered down as a volley of shots pinged off the table. Ryan and Kronin set to action as the men in the closet reloaded, the two men returning a volley and taking immediate cover. They waited a minute with no return of fire. It was Ryan who moved first, making way for the closet as Kronin covered him. Pulling back the closet door, Ryan stood ready, for a response but all that happened was three men fell out onto the floor.
Kronin pulled his gun back, stood up and made his way to Ryan’s side, there on the floor was there target, a man wanted alive, and now lying dead on the ground. “That could have gone better?” Kronin said as Ryan searched the down man.
“We were supposed to take him alive!” Ryan responded as he removed the contents of the man’s pockets and proceeded to do the same for the other two men. “We lost two good men today, I hope this dirt bag was worth it!”
“Me too.” Kronin replied as the two men made their way back out of the compound the same way they came in, each carrying a man on their shoulder.
Ryan sat up in his bed, the dream, the memory, the same every night. He vowed it would be the first and the last time he was ever caught unprepared. Swinging his feet off the bed, Ryan made his way to the bathroom, shaved his face, and took a quick shower. He slipped into his pants, and tucked in his shirt before throwing on his jacket.
With a quick burst of speed Ryan threw on his tie, tied it and straightened everything up in the mirror. He strode out of his bedroom and down the hall. “Eggs sir?” Windsor asked as Ryan strode into the kitchen.
“Sounds great.” Ryan grabbed the paper off the counter, pulled out a chair and took a seat. Windsor poured him a glass of fresh squeezed Orange juice and a glass of fresh milk. Ryan went to reading the paper as Windsor made the eggs and dished them out for him on a plate with a fresh slice of toast and a small spread of strawberry jam. “Looks wonderful as always Windsor.”
“Thank you sir.” Windsor nodded and returned to the kitchen to clean it up. Ryan sat at the table in silence eating the eggs and toast all the while reading the paper. His new business venture was already paying dividends, Rob had proven to be quite the earner and for Ryan that was a great thing.
“Anything else sir?” Windsor asked as he returned from the kitchen.
“Not at all Windsor.” Ryan said with a nod before returning to his eggs as Windsor exited. As he ate his mind drifted to Rob, his new business venture, and the torture that must be going through Rob’s mind. He could see it the moment Ryan walked in.
Rob and Ryan had met once before, back in another wrestling organization, one that Ryan only had one match in. Back then Ryan cared about one thing, the contract, and that company provided the best cover, and Rob, well he was the unfortunate victim of the one night stand. Rumblings that Rob wanted a re match had reached Ryan’s ear, but the fact was, Ryan was busy, and Rob wasn’t in the companies that Ryan needed him to be in for the rematch.
Then things changed, and now here they are, both in the NEW, and Rob has his rematch. Maybe it’s not the terms that Rob wanted, but it’s the terms that he has been dealt. He chose to embroil himself with Hunter, to let that man bring him down, and now Rob has to pay the consequences, and while he does what is wrong with Ryan making a little profit? The mere thought brought a smile to Ryan’s face as he finished off the eggs and toast.
The fork clattered against the plate and Windsor appeared as if summoned by a bell. Windsor to the plate and entered the kitchen as Ryan stood up, wiped his mouth and straightened his suit before making his way down the hall and out the front door. The early morning sun just beginning to rise struck Ryan in the face and the warmth caused him to close his eyes.
In that moment Ryan basked in the sunlight and took a deep breath. Opening his eyes Ryan made his way down the walkway and to the garage. Inside the garage Ryan slipped into his Black Audi A8, backed out of the garage and took off.
20 minutes later The Audi came to a stop outside of a small Café, and Ryan emerged, straightening his suit and heading in. Inside it took him the work of 10 seconds to find the table that Kronin was sitting at and with a smile made his way over. Ryan took a seat and ordered a coffee black.
“Long time.” Kronin said as he sat across from his longtime friend.
“That it has.” Ryan said with a smile while taking the cup from the waitress. “Finally found a spot to settle down and actually make a career in this industry.” Ryan said taking a sip.
“So I have heard.” Kronin mused back. “No longer need this industry to hide your extracurricular activities?”
“I know you don’t approve of my past transgressions and I understand, but you have to understand I see that day over and over every time I fall asleep.” Ryan took a sip of his drink and tried to push the visions of that day out of his mind.
“It was a bad day, a bump in the road.” Kronin replied.
“A bad day?” Ryan replied his tone full of shock as he set the mug down. “The intel was bad, it was god damn bad Kronin. It was supposed to be a snatch and grab, no one else in the compound but the bean counters cut corners, put money ahead of the lives of the men in our group.” Ryan squeezed the handle of the mug, his anger boiling over.
“I get it Ryan, I really do.” Kronin tried to calm his friend with a soft caring tone.
“The moment my government put money ahead of the safety of their military is the moment I couldn’t be a part of it anymore Kronin.” Ryan sipped his coffee and set it down. “I know you don’t approve of what I have done, but everyone got what they deserved.”
“Kronin, but you are not the judge, you fought for the process of this country and you did those awful things Ryan.” Kronin leaned forward and took a deep breath. “You are right, I don’t agree with what you have done but I understand, and if you have moved on then I am proud of you.” Kronin smiled at his friend as he took a sip of his drink.
“Well I have moved past all that, taking my activities more to the legal side of things.” Ryan waived for the waitress who acknowledged him with a nod. “Take for instance Rob Riot, we have a history, and I could have gone out of my way to eliminate the guy, take the threat away, but I didn’t.” Ryan smiled.
“You didn’t?” Kronin smirked back. “I have never known you to do anything that didn’t help you out.” Kronin actually let out a small chuckle.
“Fine, I fucked him well, but he deserves it.” Ryan laughed harder. “You should have seen the look on his face when I walked into the shitty metal cell they had him locked in at the institution.”
“That good?” Kronin replied.
“It sparked something inside of me I hadn’t felt since I was a little kid.” Ryan sipped his drink and set it back down. “It was that same feeling you get when you first catch a ball with a glove! Or you make your first free throw, or you beat your dad at a sport.” Ryan smiled as he thought about all those things.
“Wow, that good? I would have gone with the first time you get laid, but hey whatever makes you happy.” Kronin winked and laughed. “In all seriousness, how did you get in?” Kronin asked, leaning forward as his interest was piqued.
“How do you think?” Ryan replied.
“Blackmail?” Kronin quipped back.
“Such a dirty word.” Came Ryan’s reply. “I prefer to think of it as exchange of mutually beneficial information.” Ryan smiled.
“Mutually being used liberally?” Kronin asked.
“Ok fine, exchange of information that benefits me over all others.” Ryan sipped the last of his coffee and set the mug down. “its how business works, and it has served me well for years now. Look at this suit, you think this came cheap?” Kronin shook his head no in response to Ryan.
“Nice to see you have moved from hired assassin to Blackmail and coercion.” Kronin replied, “maybe in a few years you can go to stealing cars and selling dope.”
“That won’t happen, wrestling is my new career, my other empire is already set and rolling, no need to really mess with it.” Ryan smiled before continuing. “Rob Riot is my priority and because of me, he will be more than worn down for my match.”
“Not to mention he knows what to expect from you.” Kronin quipped in.
“He can think he knows me, think he’s ready, but one thing is for sure, Rob has no idea what is coming for him. His first sample was just a taste, this week he gets the main course.” Ryan replied.
“You hungry?” Came Kronin’s reply.
“No, had eggs and Toast for breakfast.” Ryan replied.
“Never mind.” Kronin just shook his head and the two both burst into laughter. For the next hour the two men caught up on their past, they laughed, and even got quiet at times. There were moments of tension and in the end they both stood up and shook hands, clearly their friendship having been re strengthened after all the years.
