The New Guards Night
‘The Man Comes Around’ by Johnny Cash plays over the PA and the crowd gathered around the ring in the abandoned town of Courtland Arizona comes to their feet and cheers as Nathan walks out from a building marked as a saloon but which serves as the entranceway for the talent, the New Edge World Title slung over his shoulder as he makes his way down to the ring, grabbing a mic from one of the stagehands as he makes his way into the ring and smiles, looking out over the crowd, taking a moment to bask in the crowd’s cheers before finally nodding and, as his music dies down, pacing around the ring for a moment before he smirks and gathers his thoughts.
Jill Matthews: “And it looks like Demented will start off with the World Champ. Say what you want, but I doubt anyone in New Edge Wrestling has more pressure than he does right now. He has to do what no one has done for a very long time now, defend the World Title. We’ve had a trend of the challenger unseating the champion in the Champion’s first defense and add to that that tonight, Nathan must lock his opponent in a coffin and bury the coffin six feet under the ground to win… these are very high stakes indeed for the Champ.”
Vince Walters: “And Nathan is going to be just the next in a long line of failed champions. Austen has all the momentum tonight.”
Nathan takes a deep breath and looks out over the crowd as he leans on the turnbuckle and looks at the area where an open grave lies. He takes out his smartphone and holds it up a bit, glancing over at it.”
Nathan: “Really remarkable little gadget these things are. Social Media lets you do all sorts of fun stuff. Like according to the so called experts and know it alls, big mouths and telephone tough guys on the internet, I shouldn’t even bother to show up here tonight. I should just lay this title down, hop into that hole there and cover myself with dirt and call it a night.”
Nathan smirks and laughs for a bit before narrowing his eyes and taking a deadly serious look.
Nathan: “Austen Impact, understand this you little shit. The way I described is the ONLY way you would ever get near this belt. You damn sure aren’t man enough to beat me. No, you’ve made it clear as daylight what’s important to you, and this belt isn’t it..
See, that’s the problem.. too many assumptions, too many people thinking they know the score here. Well I have a question for the so called know it alls. For the experts. What are you going to do when the New Guard rises beginning here at Demented? What will you all say and do when Ricky Cassels, a man who has been used and taken advantage of by Jesse Styles, finally ends Al Envy’s reign as TA Champion? What’s going to happen when Sasha Foote once more showcases her talent and when Johnny Bonecrusher shows that he has, as all the vets demand, paid his dues in this business and now is ready for a shot on the big stage?
What about the likes of Teagan Taylor or Ricky Molaroni? What happens when one of them or the other talented newcomers shuts Blair and Scarlet up and nets themselves a title shot. The New Guard isn’t going anywhere and this is just the beginning, with two shows coming, New Edge will be forced to give everyone a chance to succeed and move up the ladder, change is coming, like it or not…
And that...brings me back to you, Austen. So sure of yourself. Why? Because your fan club of one is telling you that you’re the next champ? A woman who knows nothing of New Edge, you, me, or anything at all except how provide an excellent distraction? Consider the paths we took to reach here, Austen. I have lost one match since New Edge reopened. To Valora, thanks mostly to interference by you. You sir, are no Valora. You are no where near her level and even with your help she still only barely defeated me. What about you? Do you believe she will return the favor? Don’t kid yourself. Valora is too selfish, too greedy, too caught up in her own agenda and the five thousand fights she’s constantly trying to pick to give a shit about you.
You earned, and I use that word loosely, this title shot by literally running. You had to run to a safe zone…”
Nathan pauses and looks around the area and smirks, before shrugging.
Nathan: “No where to run to, lad. You’re going to have to pry this belt from my cold dead hands if you want it.. Better make your peace, lad. One of us is going to end the night in a very deep hole. Which is bad news for you given that tonight, the streak of World Champions failing to defend their title comes to an end…
Tonight. I’m going to bury you, Austen Impact. In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti.”
Nathan then drops the mic and walks back towards where he came from as he takes one final glance at the grave that would be occupied by either him or Austen by the end of the night and nods, before heading back to the wrestlers area.
