Kronin sat in his office after the departure of Ralphie and Malloy and thought for a moment. Or at least it looked like thinking to the average person. In reality, Kronin was multi-tasking between forcing himself not to kill the two nerds and pondering an important question. It was the question that forced him to reach out for his phone, only to pause as the door opened and Ryan Elias walked into the office, looking around and then looking at Kronin, raising an eyebrow. “Okay, you were never this big into computers so I’m going to guess Malloy and Ralphie have been here already.”
Kronin, without ever losing the deadpan look on his face, nods. “They’d never find the bodies, man…”
Ryan smirks and nods. “I know, but they’re really not worth the effort. What did they do?” Kronin sighs. “Well, Malloy modified my phone so that it can connect to any cell tower, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that in addition to no roaming charges and strong signal, it’ll be much harder to track my..no, wait. That would actually be useful. Nevermind. Aside from that, I have boobs on my phone, which I’m sure Lil will be thrilled about. I also have a computer with every video game ever made and… yeah.. I’m trying to figure out who the fucking genius was that hired them.”
Ryan nodded. “That would be Jesse Styles.”
Kronin blinks. “So, how the hell did they end up on my show?”
Ryan shrugs. “I’m going to guess one of those weird little curveballs Jesse threw you, perhaps just adding their contracts to the shuffle of new recruits and forgetting to tell you those two have about as much wrestling or combat training as a drunken one legged midget in an ass kicking contest.”
Kronin nods. “Yeah.. I knew I should have done more research.. too many new people though and I was busy digging up Jesse’s contract so I could draft him.”
Ryan nods. “See? You two stuck it to each other in your own ways, it balances out.”
Kronin rolls his eyes. “No, it cancelled out when he drafted me to Ignite. This is something new, but I trained Lilly in fighting and wrestling… if need be, I’ll train those two as well and at least give them a chance to survive in the ring.”
Ryan nodded. “Speaking of Lilly, how come she doesn’t have a contract here?” Kronin shrugs. “I don’t know, for one, until recently I was never in a position to hire someone. Besides, she needs a bit more training. Her technical skills are improving but she’s got a build for high paced, high flying offense as well, Valora has worked with her a bit before, I’m debating checking to see if she’d do some more work with her, speaking of which, did you find out anything about her in the little spy games you two have been playing?”
Ryan nods. “Not yet. I’m hoping for some more info and will keep you in the loop, but meantime, speaking of fighting, how bout you on Ignite?”
Kronin shrugs. “I have Kaden Kessler in a first blood match. I think Kaden pissed Jesse off, not surprising considering the man’s good for running his mouth but not much else. Actually scratch that, he kinda sucks at running his mouth too. He’s just another one of these next generation wrestlers that thinks they don’t have to pay their dues or work for anything, just walk in, run your mouth, make demands and get everything handed to you? What the hell happened to doing things the right way? No, nowadays it seems everyone’s looking to take the shortcut.”
Ryan shrugs. “Work smarter not harder? Come on, man, to a certain extent, this is what we did. I mean, it’s not like we were polite and followed rules with the enemy all the time.”
Kronin glances at Ryan. “That was different. That was war. And you and I both went through more than a few different kinds of hell to get where we were. We didn’t just join the military and demand to be special forces without having to prove worthy of the distinction.”
Ryan nods. “Fair point. But then again, this isn’t the military and here, in this business… it is a lot like war. Win by any means necessary. Can this Kessler guy stand up to you pure talent wise? Probably not, but he managed to get himself noticed. He managed to get himself a contract, then he managed to piss Jesse off enough to get you as his first match in NEW. And a first blood match. So go out there, take him to suplex city, beat the punk bloody and collect the easy pay day.”
Kronin thinks about this for a second and smirks, shrugging. “I suppose that’s one way of looking at it.. but regardless of his talent level, he’s from St. Louis, so I doubt the fight will be as easy as it would normally be.”
Ryan shrugs. “So the added bonus of kicking his ass in front of his hometown fans. Wear a Blackhawks jersey and really piss them off.”
Kronin laughs. “Nah, St. Louis is used to the Blues choking. Besides, I’m not trying to be a dick to the fans. Just trying to teach a mouthy little punk a lesson in respect. I don’t need to piss the fans off to do that.”
Ryan shrugged and prepared to leave, pausing for a second before turning back to Kronin. “So why’d you do it?” Kronin raises an eyebrow and Ryan shakes his head. “Valora and me. Why team us up? Also, can I trust her?”
Kronin nods. “Valora loves to win. If you don’t screw her over, you can trust her to have your back during the match. I don’t understand her code, but she does seem to have her own twisted code of honor. As for teaming you two up...seemed like a good idea at the time.”
Ryan smirks and shakes his head. “Same old Kronin. See you later, buddy.” He said as he left, Kronin standing up and looking at his phone and computer again before sighing. The next time his door opened, Lilly walked in and closed the door behind her, blinking as she saw the computer set up he had. “What the fuck? I thought computers were my thing, babe? When did you become the NSA or something?”
Kronin looks up from behind his desk. “The nerds. Malloy and Ralphie did this. Malloy decided I needed a computer that could play every game ever invented, apparently.” Kronin said, rattling the list of specs and watching Lilly’s eyes bug out. “Wow… You know the things you could do with that?” Kronin shakes his head. “Glad you’re excited..” He says going back to work when Lilly’s next question hits him as she walks over to the desk and picks up his phone looking at it. “Babe? Mind telling me why there are tits on your phone? Mine not good enough?”
Without missing a beat, Kronin replies. “Malloy. Poor bastard has probably never even seen a real pair since his mom stopped breast feeding him so he thinks that’s the coolest thing ever. I’m trying to figure out how to remove it… it’s a custom app he made, something about how it scans the net for pictures of boobs and updates the background with different pictures.”
Lilly blinks. “Ummm babe… do you know how totally easy it would be to adapt that program and do some really nasty things?”
Kronin nods. “I’m no computer expert but I know enough about them to see the potential yes. I’ll worry about the cell phone after I deal with Kaden Kessler.”
“Yeah, what’s up there? I thought you and Jesse were supposed to be friends.”
Kronin grins. “We kinda are. Kaden’s pissed Jesse off… Jesse knows better than anyone what I can do in that ring. He put me in a first blood match.”
Lilly nods.. “So… you think this is punishment for Kaden and not punishment for say… drafting his wife. Or the World Champ? Or Valora?”
Kronin laughs. “First of all, while Jesse recognizes her talent, he and Valora rarely see eye to eye. Yes, he’d take her in a heartbeat, but I’m sure he’s waiting for her to cause me the same headaches she causes him on nearly a daily basis. As for Scarlet, she’s a hell of a fighter. I expect she’ll make a huge contribution to Lights Out. Now, interesting as this discussion is for me, I don’t think you came to my office to discuss my roster and try to figure out Jesse’s motives in booking this match.”
Lilly looks around the room for a few moments and then sighs. “You’re right. I want a contract.”
Kronin, who had taken a sip of coffee while waiting for Lilly to speak, nearly spit it out as he heard the request, forcing himself to swallow the coffee before shaking his head and looking at her. “Contract? Like a wrestler’s contract?”
Lilly nods. “Why not? You trained me. Hell even Valora has helped me learn and refine my high flying game a bit. And you can sign talent, right Mr. President?”
Kronin sighed, making a mental note to have words with Valora later and sighed. “Okay, barring the fact that it would a fairly big conflict of interest for me to sign you, I’d still have to get final approval from Jesse and if I’m not mistaken, the next talent New Edge gets goes to Ignite. Also, you’re forgetting something very important.”
Lilly leans against the wall and stares at Kronin who continues. “I can protect you if you’re not a wrestler. If you’re not a wrestler and an enemy of mine attacks you or something. I can take action against them. If you’re a wrestler, you take all the risks and any enemies I have may just decide it’s easier to come at you than it is to come at me directly.”
Lilly nods. “So, you’re saying I can’t take care of myself and need you to look after me, is that it?”
Kronin sighs and winces. “I’m not going to win this argument, am I?” He says before trying again. “You know that’s not what I’m saying but think back to my issues with Jesse and KOP. They went after my family, in Germany Lil. I was actually thinking you could take another job, on Lights Out.”
Lilly says nothing as she stands, looking at Kronin waiting for his counter offer and Kronin glances at his desk again for a moment before looking back up at his fiance and clearing his throat. “It seems I need a color commentator, and I was thinking you might work well for that. Of course, I wasn’t expecting you to come in here and ask to be a wrestler.”
Lilly smirks and shakes her head. “Wow… commentator. Tell ya what babe. We’ll just table this for now before the Romani in me tells me exactly where you can stick that offer. Better get out of the suit and get training, I’d hate to see you get your ass kicked your first match back.” She said as she turned and left Kronin’s office, slamming the door behind her, Kronin sat at his desk and sighed, looking at the computer again as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “That coulda gone better…”A couple of days later saw Kronin in St. Louis, he had finished the day’s training and was sitting in the hotel’s restaurant, drinking some coffee, watching the rain fall as he looked out at St. Louis and took in the view of the iconic arch. He had to admit losing was a possibility, as much as that thought made him sick to his stomach. Kronin didn’t have many flaws, but his biggest flaw was ironically the thing that allowed him to understand his tag team partner so well… they were both consummate perfectionists and professionals. They got a job, they followed that job to the letter. No changes. They had rules, structure, order. A strict routine. Discipline. With Kronin it had been instilled in him since birth. Having the misfortune of being born in East Germany when it was still Communist, Kronin was selected as being a good athletic candidate early on and thus his entire life had spent training in almost military style life with a single goal. Perfection. Be the best. Accept nothing less than total dominance. Second place was worthless. First loser. That upbringing and mindset had been reinforced by Kronin’s time in the military and Kronin had brought both of those backgrounds to his approach on professional wrestling.
It was that mentality that had had Kronin silently seething in anger as idiot after idiot followed Al’s lead like blind sheep with the ‘B Show’ B.S. Al Envy comes up with one tired old insult to hide the fact that he wasn’t number 1 at something for once and everyone jumps on board trying to be cool. Unfortunately, they just proved how little they thought for themselves and how little they knew, Kronin’s roster was loaded with talent. He had Hall of Famers, fighters that were on the cusp of being Hall of Famers, rookie talent loaded with potential. He had traded Sasha Foote to acquire Ricky Cassels in a move that was paying dividends now in that it had helped him book a solid main event and Ricky was a tried and true asset whereas Sasha was rapidly proving what Valora said about her right,. Kronin had seen Kaden’s promo and had found it amusing. He too, at first had wondered the point of this match. But as he listened to Kaden, it was obvious that Kaden’s ego and lack of knowledge of Jesse Styles was coming through.
Why did Jesse book the match? The most likely answer was simple. Because he could. It could also be a subtle way of getting back at Kaden for that ambush when Kaden got in his shot on Jesse. It wouldn’t be the first time in Kronin’s career Jesse had used him essentially as hired muscle to deal with a problem, Kronin thought with a smirk as he thought of the lesson in respect he had given Mason Stockholm.
The other thing that had stood out to Kronin watching Kaden speak was that Kaden had no idea who he was stepping into the ring with. Kronin didn’t mind getting violent if he needed to and the appeal about whether or not Kronin wanted people close to him watching the fight? Heh… in reality the only thing that ever made Kronin nervous about Lilly watching him fight is the chance she might just see the dark side Kronin kept buried deep within. The soldier. The win at all costs mentality. The person that could wreck all sorts of havoc.
The last person to see that had been…. Jesse Styles himself. At Justice. He had hit Kronin and sent him to the mat hard. As Kronin hit the mat, he thought about how the fight was going and the hell that his family had been put through because of Jesse Styles. Kronin pushed himself up to his feet, his eyes just went dead as he turned and looked at Jesse Styles, advancing slowly towards the man, hands at his sides, not afraid of anything,,,
That had spelled the beginning of the end for Jesse Styles in that match. Thankfully, Lilly had not seen that live. On TV, a lot of the.. effect was lost. She had laughed and lectured him about keeping his hands up. Now she wanted to be a wrestler herself. Bad enough that she wasn’t speaking to him. She hadn’t made the trip to St. Louis from Chicago, and that was what had Kronin worried. He was distracted. Thinking about Lilly instead of thinking about beating Kaden to a bloody pulp.
A snap brought him back to the matter at hand as Nathan looked at him. “Damn it man! Focus! Worry about Lilly after the match, for now, you gotta get in the ring and beat Kaden Kessler bloody. Or do you just plan to roll over and play dead and let some punk waltz in and make a name for himself at your expense?”
Kronin narrowed his eyes, sipping from his coffee and nodded. “No. Kaden bleeds at Ignite or I die trying. Next person to call my show the B show? What I do to Kaden will seem like a fucking vacation.”
Nathan smirked and nodded. “Now that’s what I like to hear.” Kronin smirks. “No plans for Kaden in the New Guard thing then?” Nathan shrugs. “Not sure yet, he’s welcome if he wants to help, but right now, he’s fightin’ my friend and GM, obviously I’m gonna be rootin’ for you to pull the win out. Now, I’ll try to talk to Lilly. You need to focus on the fight.”
Kronin nods. “You’re right. Time for Kaden to bleed.”
Kronin, without ever losing the deadpan look on his face, nods. “They’d never find the bodies, man…”
Ryan smirks and nods. “I know, but they’re really not worth the effort.
