GOT NO MORE HATE
AND THAT MAKES ME DANGEROUS
Humble: having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance. If only the people around me had this trait, or even could begin to fathom what it means. But alas everyone in this industry thinks they are more important than the person next to them, and for some of us we are right, we have a high level of importance, but others, well they overestimate their value.
Before you pop off at the mouth and say, but Roger, you haven’t won a match since you came back! If you think that actually matters, then you are the reason so many people in this industry have overblown ideals of self importance. Johnny thinks his title makes him important, but no one needs him, he could vanish tomorrow and no one would care. Truth be told everyone would be happier, their ears would hurt less from being yelled at.
Jesse owns this company, but he too could vanish, for every Jesse Styles there are a million Tom Dick’s waiting to start their own company. If he vanished tomorrow we would all just be happy that Vin Diesel's less charismatic little sister was gone. See that is the reality, the two loudest and most annoying blow holes in this industry and company are probably the two most unimportant people. But then that is why they are the loudest isn’t it?
Before you ask, I don’t think myself the most important person in this company, or this industry, THE FANS DO! See, they clamor for me, they beg me to come and save them from the pain and anguish they are being subjected to by Jesse and Johnny. Now, comes the opportunity I have been trying to get since I came back, but I have to share it with Valora. Another member of the roster with an inflated sense of importance.
No one asked Valora to get into my business, no one wanted her to come to the ring, and yet she did. But I am no stranger to this play, I have seen this movie before. The upstart wanting the notoriety of another comes a long and does the thing they think the world wants, they help. It’s a classic trope, one that has been used more than your favorite Johnnyism, ‘SOAK SOME UP’.
Not to tangent too much, but what are we soaking up and what are we supposed to be using to do this soaking up? Will toilet paper suffice? Sure we all know he wants us to soak up his greatness and deal with it, or stew on whatever garbage he vomited from his brain into the microphone, but why? No one wants to be like Johnny, deep down inside Johnny doesn’t want to be like Johnny, he’s just fallen so far down the hole he can’t climb his way out. He’s like that guy that makes a bad bet, loses, then doubles down on a worse bet.
But I am digressing, we need to get back to the topic at hand, Valora, my tag partner. Sure she isn’t new, and she has had some success before, but even with her modest success, no one cared about her. She doesn’t move the needle, doesn’t instill faith in the masses. I have done what she dreams about, I have stepped into the ring with Johnny and walked away with a win, A LEGITIMATE WIN! See that is what separates me from everyone else in this industry, I have done what they all dream of.
From the moment I walked through the doors of NEW I was a target of vitriol, everyone in the back saw me for what I was. They knew my ceiling was unmatched, that I could take this company to places it never knew before, and I did. But that only bred the haters, haters I had to silence, one after the other. NEW didn’t want that though, they didn’t want a hero they wanted a villain, someone fed them a lie, and so altruism gave way to selfish vanity and this company faltered at every turn, it lost the thing it needed.
Now the company returns, and once more vanity reigns supreme, and the fans clamor for what they always wanted in the first place. They clamor for their hero to take down the evil that has encompassed the company. But the company wishes to hedge its bets, they fear what could happen if I am to return and be the beacon of hope, so they pair me with someone to hold me back.
AND THAT MAKES ME DANGEROUS
Roger strode down the stairs and into the kitchen, a half empty bowl sat on the table where Marie loved to sit, the milk brown from the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. He smiled and shook his head, a memory of the past flashing to his mind.
“UNO!” Marie announced as she dropped the blue 4 onto the stack.
With a wry smile Roger placed the black draw 4 wild on top of the blue four and declared. “Green.”
“What? That’s not fair daddy.” Marie exclaimed as she drew 4 cards from the draw pile. “I want to win daddy.”
“Everyone always wants to win peanut, but sometimes, sometimes you just don’t get to win no matter how hard you try.” Roger watched as Marie dropped a green skip card, then a red skip card, and finally a red 3.
“Is that what happened at Justice?” Marie asked as she watched her father draw a card and drop it onto the pile, a red 5.
“I did all I could, but well alas it wasn’t in the cards for me.” Roger said.
Marie dropped a blue 5 onto the pile. “UNO!!!!” She announced. With a deep breath, Roger exhaled and put a green 5 onto the pile, Marie placing a green 2 onto the pile. “I win daddy, I win.” She leapt from the table and waved her hands wildly doing a rather cute dance one would expect from a 5 year old.
Roger scooped up his little girl, gave her a kiss on the forehead and set her back down. “It’s about time for the riding lessons, why don’t you run along.” He said with a wink as Marie’s eyes lit up and she tore off out of the back of the house and down to the stables. Roger turned his attention to the table and began picking up the cards from their game.
BACK TO THE PRESENT
Roger shook the memory from his head and retrieved the bowl, carrying it to the kitchen. He rinsed it and placed it into the dishwasher. On his heel he turned and looked out over his land that spanned as far as the eye could see from the back of his home. Another smile crossed his face as his eyes fell upon the playground he built for Marie 4 years ago, his memories flying back into his mind.
“I saw you climb all the way up on your own, then slide down on your own. Good job Peanut, I’m proud of you!” Roger tasseled her hair, grabbed her hand, and the two walked over to a picnic table that had some water bottles, on it, and a lunch bag. They took a seat and Roger pulled out the Ham sandwiches that Anicka had prepared for them, he put one in front of Marie, and one in front of himself. They both dug in.
“I like Anicka.” Marie said, mouthful of sandwich.
Roger finished chewing and swallowed. “Don’t talk with your mouthful Peanut. And I do too.” Roger replied.
“She’s way better than Blair daddy, don’t you think?” This time Marie spoke before taking a bite of her sandwich.
“I do Peanut, way better.” Roger smiled at Marie as he emphasized the word way. “What do you like about Ani Peanut?”
Marie finished chewing and swallowed. “She is nice to me daddy, I kind of feel bad I called her a biter, but she said it’s ok, she forgave me. Blair never forgave me daddy. But Ani did.” Marie took another bite of the sandwich and smiled as she chewed.
“I am glad she did Peanut.” Roger said before taking a swig of his water.
“Plus she is beautiful, her hair is so pretty daddy. Don’t you think so daddy?” Marie was already taking a bite of her sandwich as she finished the question.
“I do Peanut, I do agree.” Roger’s eyes wandered, his words half trailed as he was lost in the thought Of Anicka’s beauty.
“Don’t you think daddy?” Marie’s question pulled Roger back from his daydream.
“I’m sorry Peanut, what was the question?” Roger asked.
“I think Ani likes me, Don’t you think daddy?” Marie reasked the question.
“I do Peanut, I think Ani really likes you a lot.” Roger smiled.
“I think she likes you too daddy.” Marie nodded up and down as she put the rest of her sandwich in her mouth, chewed it up, swallowed some water and ran off for the playground, and the swings.
“I think so too Peanut.” Roger said under his breath as he watched his little blonde ball of fire rush off to the playground after having devoured her lunch faster than him.
PRESENT DAY
Roger snapped out of the daze and looked down at his ringing phone. A swipe of the thumb was all it took to open the line and he raised the phone to his ear. “Yeah…Don’t worry…It’s all going to go just the way it needs…Yeah I know I probably won’t get a chance like this again, don’t worry, I have it all worked out, Valora won’t be getting in the way of what needs to be done.” Roger flicked his thumb against the screen as he pulled the phone from his ear and slid it into his pocket.
“You okay boss?” Shane asked as he stepped into the room.
“Yeah, just remembering the good times.” Roger said, his eyes fixated out the back window.
“Don’t let them go.” Shane replied.
“They are already gone, the past is over, the mistakes were made, the only way is forward.” Roger smiled at the thought. “What was, is no more, all that is, is all that there is to come!”
“Head down then. Anything you need before I take Marie to school?” Shane asked.
“Tell Matthew we start phase 2.” Roger gave a dismissive wave as he finished the statement, his gaze returning to the outside.
Humble or not, the past is just that, the past. We can’t live in it, if we do we are simply destined to repeat the mistakes we made. It is time to move forward, no matter how good the feelings of the past are. I am coming for what I deserve, coming to get what I am owed by Jesse and Johnny, this isn’t Roger from 4 years ago. There is no apathy for your pain anymore, there is only the determination to take away my own.
I made my mistakes, chose my path, and now I am the man walking it. Jesse and Johnny just happen to be standing on it. There are no obstacles that will stop me from what I want, nothing that will keep me from my goal. Wins and losses don’t matter, the only feelings that I care about are my own. Because for me there is nothing to lose, I have already won everything I ever wanted, this for me is just fun.
AND THAT MAKES ME DANGEROUS
NO PRIDE OR SHAME
