Father figures are important in a person's life. They are important to a woman as to a man but it seems the man has to have that all important figure in his life or his life is doomed to problems.
We all have a father that we either love because he was always there for us. In other cases, we may hate the man that was one half of the reason we are in existence. Maybe he didn't pay us enough attention. Maybe he was never there for us. Maybe he was just too hypercritical or tried too hard to mold us in his own image.
No matter what the reason is, the most healthy relationships with this figure leads to a better and more fulfilling life on average.
Iceman had a kind of relationship with his dad that most would be jealous of.
They did things together. He took karate with his dad. Iceman played sports with his dad growing up. The father in his life was very proud of his son, and obviously loved his son very much from all of the time he took up with him. Hell, even the mother would get jealous some times when she wanted to go out on the town. He insisted to stay around little Sam and take up more time with him. Sam, as he was known growing up, had a fulfilling childhood indeed.
Then tragedy happened.
A ski trip that saw the dad of the man known as Iceman now take his son with him. It was supposed to be a trip for the mom and dad. However, when baby sitting plans fell through, the trip had to go through as planned. It was a romantic gesture that Mr Sampson had for Mrs Sampson due to their recent marital problems. Thus he didn't dare cancel this trip. Iceman was but six years old. He waited in the room while his parents went out on a daily ski venture. Suddenly Iceman's life would change forever. On a big right turn, his dad missed the slope and landed neck first right into the snow trying to avoid a tree. This fall broke his neck and killed him instantly.
Iceman will never forget the day he found out from his mom. His mom was distraught as she went back to the room. Not even thinking of being strong for her son, she broke down. She cried. Well we all understand why but she could have been a bit more supportive of Sam. At least that is what he has thought to this day about his mom. She also handled this by going out and sleeping around with every guy she met. No she wasn't a prostitute but to Iceman she was but didn't get paid. He, to this day, only refers to his mom as his birth giver. He never refers to her as Mom.
We digress on our story though.
Iceman was not going to be caught with his pants down though as the old saying goes. He was a strong kid. He found solace in his grandfather who raised him from the time he was six until the time he was able to go off to college. He came to think of this man as his second father, but believe me. To him his father was a super hero. Noone could ever replace this man in his life, and no man ever did.
Iceman frequently visited the grave site that had become his dad's eternal resting place quite frequently.Today is no exception.
Snow was the order of the day as we see it drifting on the ground from the wind. It came down lightly though from the sky as we could see white as far as the eye could see. The overcast was truly the most remarkable thing that a person could see.
Snow was a very big thing in the home state of the Iceman of Colorado. Yes it's March but we are still seeing signs of winter everywhere. The grave yard was littered with snow as we can see snow plows trying to uncover graves for families to visit their loved ones.
Then the camera goes over to Iceman. Iceman is standing there with his best friend Mike Phoenix as he is holding some flowers. They are over a grave that has to apparently be that of the Iceman's father. Iceman is decked out in a short sleeved white shirt that reads "Denver Broncos" with the team logo right underneath it. He has on faded jeans and his trademark dark shades. In contrast, Mike Phoenix is decked out in a red sports coat with blue pants. Yes it's very cold but Iceman seems to love it. Quite a strange man but then we never claimed that he was anything like being a normal man.
Iceman:You know Mike. I think it was on this day when I was six that I lost my dad.
Mike:I know pal.
Mike pats his pal on the shoulder.
Iceman:I know. I was fortunate to have the kind of relationship with my father that I did. I still miss him though. He was someone that I always looked up to.
Mike:I know man. Just remember the good times.
Iceman:cliche. I do. I always remember them. They were quite numerous too. He first trained me in karate but I never took it seriously. I always, at that time, saw it as a waste of time. It wasn't until the bully that bothered me years later that I took it seriously. You know. I feel like I let the man down.
Mike:(looking at his friend with compassion)You didn't. He knew how much you loved him.
Iceman takes off his shades. He places them in his jean pocket as he lays the flowers down on the grave.
Iceman:I have a match with Dixie Clement this week for the youngblood title. I never take an opponent lightly, Mike. I don't care if she's a woman, a man or an alien. I know she wouldn't have that belt if she didn't deserve it and wasn't quite good enough to get the shot to begin with. I am on a losing streak and I don't know how I managed to get it to begin with, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. Dixie, you are quite an athlete. You have prevailed in what has been traditionally known as a man's sport. You have shown the critics that you are an athlete to be taken seriously. I do. I know you will do what it takes to keep that title, and I would do the same.
Mike:I know I would, no matter what level the title was on.
Iceman:We are alike in that way, Mike. It's the lowest title on the teir but we have to start somewhere. Truth is I see many bright things for Dixie in the future. I really do. She happens to be in my way though. That isn't a good place to be right now. Nothing personal. I don't dislike her. I don't hate her. I just want my win streak to start, and I will get that no matter who I have to beat and no matter how I have to do it. I'm called the Cold One for a reason though. Oh and..well I hadn't forgotten about Lost in Time either.
Mike:I know but just focus on Dixie right now.
Iceman:true.
Iceman clears his throat and sighs a bit as he continues talking.
Iceman:I hate Lost but am quite focused on you Dixie. I've done my pushups, situps and squats in the gym with your name firmly on the wall with a picture of you winning that title. I want to focus one hundred and ten percent on you. I have done just that. Now Ignite is right around the corner. My win streak is that much closer to starting. I will do it at your expense. I know. I said the same thing against DDD last week. Things didn't go as planned. I thought I was at my best, but apparently I had a ways to go.
Mike:just put it aside man. It could happen to the best of us. He had that hold in tightly. You either had to give up or to have an injury that would threaten your career. One match isn't worth all of that. He is on a tear. I'm not sure anyone could have beaten him last week.
Iceman:I know. I won't cry over spilled milk. I lost a match and that won't be the last one I'll ever lose. Dixie, I don't plan for this to be another loss. I plan to walk in there as the challenger to your title, and walk out as the new champ. I don't plan to lose a match this time around. Dixie, as I've said. I have a lot of respect for you. However, by the fact that you're in my way makes me want to do what I must. Don't take it personally. It's business.
Iceman lowers his head and looks like he's saying a prayer as Mike lowers his out of respect for his friend. He goes down on his knees before he starts. After a few moments,Iceman then makes a cross with his right hand and stands up from a kneeling position. He looks directly into the camera.
Iceman:Tell me Dixie. Did you plan on staying the Youngblood Champ forever? I bet not. I bet you have world title aspirations just like any other athlete does. Well you dream about big time gold. You dream about what may one day be. However, this day won't be yours. I will become world title holder and it all starts here. Can you handle the heat? IF not..maybe you're not ready for the cold!! If you are, then I'll see you at Ignite.
After saying that, Iceman shakes his head as his hair comes down. He shakes hands with his friend, Mike Phoenix. The two walk off in the opposite direction as we get one last look at the snow and the grave..with the flowers on top of it.
Scene fades to blue and white....
