New York carried on as usual; it carried on as usual when the towers fell, and it’ll carry on no matter what happens, and no matter who’s standing there. The skyscrapers, the yellow cabs, the brownstones and apartment blocks are all so very distinctive, and they seem to go on forever. But nowhere is it easier to be alone in a crowd than in this city. It’s a city of potential killers, with a million Patrick Batemans and Travis Bickles and Sons of Sam waiting to emerge.
Sometimes, God sent his angels.
But sometimes, unimaginable horrors dug into her city.
You could fight, or beg, or pray but it always came down to this you need to stand up for what is right. That’s what Ms USA stood for. She stood up for the person that could not fight for themselves.
Brilliant red, gold and yellow are abound on the main street of Little Tokyo. This is where her top secret hideout is situated.
There is a low table with a black lacquered surface; a couple of tea bowls, all the utensils for the traditional tea ceremony. Against one wall was a Japanese-style shrine with an image of Buddha; it was clearly a costly antique. The floors are covered with tatami mats, and calligraphy makes for popular wall hangings.
A young woman squatted down at the table and began to pour the tea, her wrist crooked at the elegantly correct angle. After a few moments’ meditation she handed Ms USA a bowl of what looks like traditional Japanese tea.
“This will make you feel refreshed Miss.” She did not look at Ms USA as it would be disrespectful.
Ms USA was in her usual hero garb and her face was masked from all that were in the room.
She was knelt in the sei-za position – knees and shins on the floor, feet crossed under her buttocks. She turned towards the young girl sat to her right. It was Kid Freeze, her side kick. Kid was trying to make herself comfortable on a couple of cushions.
“Kid, you with us? You seem to be quite uncomfortable there?” She turned back towards the front.
“This wrestling thing is going to be interesting for us,” She turned and looked at Kid Lightning sat by the table. “Being the guardian of New York it doesn’t pay the bills so I’ve got to try something different for that. And this wrestling thing pays enough money to keep us in Lycra and caltrops. But we just need to remember its wrestling, not real fighting. We cannot compromise our secret identities. No one should know who we really are.”
“Don’t get me started on that Ms USA,” nodded Kid Freeze, “ever since it became cool to be a super hero they’ve all been coming out of the wood work. Since movies like Dark Knight Rises and Avengers came along it’s been so cool to put on a mask and pretend to be a hero. This isn’t some Michael Bay movie. This is real life.”
“That is why I have come here to NEW. I can see these people as they really are. Some of these are super villains in hiding,” Kid Freeze fidgeted slightly trying to get a little bit more comfortable. “Kid Freeze, we will bring a fitting destruction to those that stand against the American way. That is why I will bide my time with their mooks and sidekicks this week until we can take out the real villains like that Ryan Pugh or the King Pin of all villainy Johnny Stylez.”
“People like the Canadian Jacob Neal or this Cassidy punk. Are they worthy of your time?” smiled Kid Freeze. “I’m Sorry Ms USA but those mooks are small fry for you. And don’t get me started on Denny Doods or the Morgan guy? Do you really have to prove yourself to the powers that be?”
“Powers that be?” Her teeth showed as she smiled slightly before she turned back to face forward. “Powers that be? That Jesse Styles thinks of himself as a cross between the Kingpin and Lex Luthor but he’s not even in their league.”
“You’re probably correct there,” nodded Kid Freeze, “So what have you got in mind for your match?”
“I will not only bring a judgement to those in my match. Denny Dodds may be from here also but he doesn’t seem to be in the same league as I am. But being Ms USA does have its drawbacks.”
“You do a lot of that high flying stuff don’t you Ms USA? It’ll be interesting to see grown men face you in their jocks to see if they could you tap out?” she could hardly keep the smirk off of her face. “Why would you do that?”
Laughing out loud Ms USA looked directly into Kid Freeze’s face, “All four of my so called opponents in this match will not last in this industry,” she paused. “With the power that I have they don’t even stand a chance.”
“And one of them is a Canadian,” Kid Freeze smiled, “And you know how good they are at wrestling.”
“So have you been scouting NEW for me like I asked you too? You know that I don’t like surprises.”
“Yes I had a look last week. I wore a costume of one of their fans and sat at ringside and scouted their talent. I saw some potential for a big team up with Scarlet Styles team of super heroes. But they also had some villains that went by the name of the Kliq but don’t get me started on Unstable.”
“Unstable?” laughed Ms USA, “Unstable? Are they some escapee’s from some weird asylum?”
“Unstable,” smiled Kid Freeze, “Since they lost that Nocturnal villain they’ve been following some masked monster.” He paused for a split second, “Called Seth Iser.”
“Seth? Seth Iser was a phenomenal when I use to watch wrestling. Always thought he was some kind of super villain wannabie instead of that devil worshipper he was pretending to be.”
“True but I need to concentrate on who they have thrown at me this week. Devil Worshippers can come at a later time. For now I need to throw myself into beating those four other guys.”
Kid Freeze fidgeted and had to stand to stretch her legs. “This place is pretty small, now that you’ve got a contract with this NEW maybe we could get ourselves a bigger secret hideout so we don’t have to keep coming here after our missions out into the city.”
Laughing Ms USA stood up and turned towards her side kick. “That brings a good point Kid. You and I need to set one up somewhere near the NEW arena whilst we go out and recruit for our super hero super team to defeat these dastardly villains.”
“To true Ms USA, to true, “Kid Freeze holds out her hand which Ms USA promptly knuckled up to. “Kid, I’m going to fly high against these mooks. Look at this week’s show, Denny Doods? Jacob Neal? Who do they think they are? Do they think they’ve got the goods like we do? Kid, I was patrolling this city when they were young kids.………”
Ms USA smiled as she reminisced about her early days of patrolling before even Kid Freeze was around. “I had a cool time, I had the dream. I remember those family times but I’m all grown up now. I’ve been fighting for a living for a few years now; I’ve been fighting in some dodgy places in New York. And it was good that some of them hadn’t heard of my old man so they treated me as me and not him.”
“Get over it Ms USA, your father is an icon of crime but he’s gone now and you’ve got to move on. Kid Freeze shook his head, “Those punks will get what’s coming to them Ms USA, I just hope that NEW know what they’ve done.”
