Things had certainly changed in the life of Renegade during the past few weeks. His family issues had finally been put to rest and he had finally captured the X Core title from Ray Andrews. Things were finally on the up and the future looked bright. However that brightness quickly faded as Renegade lay in a grave with pounds of dirt being poured over his body, Until darkness devoured him. He lay there, still until he was eventually pulled out and then there was the brightness again, illuminating his life, he wasn't bitter at all after being buried alive, Of course he was disappointed in losing but the nature of his defeat earned him a week off. Something in which he wouldn't publicly admit, but he was secretly happy of the week break.
Night had set. A chill in the air, it seemed that Spring was late this year. The street was fairly quiet apart from a few people here and there. The street lamps lighting up in the dark providing a source of light. A door of a bar opens and out steps Renegade along with his friend, obviously enjoying a night out judged by their looks. Neither were drunk, they were more merry than anything. Stumbling out of the door into the chill of night, they walked down the street in search of a cab. Passing a few drunks as they walked. Renegade was sure he was recognised by one of them, but as a drunk, he could of thought Renegade was anyone, trying to avoid eye contact, they continued working.
"I can't believe it man. You were buried alive two weeks ago and you just don't even seem to be concerned. I mean isn't that most people's worst fear. Cuz I know for a fact I'd of been shitting my pants if that was me."
"I've had worse burials before."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"It's kind of a perk of the job in this business...well perhaps perk is the wrong word, but at least this time I wasn't buried in some field with some maniac chanting weird shit trying to control me. I mean that was one strange time. This time it was quite tame, I was just buried, then they pulled me out a few minutes later. Not saying tame is bad though I think I may of preferred this one to the last."
That was one hell of a memory. Almost four years ago now when he was first buried alive. It scared him he wouldn't lie, but he'd gotten over it after time had passed. But it was freaky when he lay there while some guy chanted crap at him about demons and creatures.
"Wait what? You were buried in a field once with some strange person chanting at you. Why?"
"Oh it doesn't matter, it was just some nut job who tried to awaken some kind of dark demon in me to help do his bidding. Quite scary at the time though. All in the past now though, Actually, I wonder what he's up to these days. I should get in touch."
Last he heard that guy had given up the game and retired from wrestling. Renegade just hoped he'd given up his ritualistic burying too. It wasn't fun and he wouldn't wish it on his worst enemy. Come to think about it. Renegade never did get his revenge for that. Time had passed for that it seems.
"Yeah he sounds swell. So you failed to mention to New Edge that you'd been buried alive before? That's crazy man something in which I don't want to go through once, let alone twice. Was it safe in there though, I mean you took one almighty blow before you fell into that pit."
"Yeah that's why they gave me the week off I think. Numerous little niggles along with a few blows to the head. They thought I could benefit from a week off. Also something about having an averse reaction to being buried alive. I think it was their own way of making sure I didn't go crazy down the street with an axe or something and blame it on the psychological problems of being buried alive....twice."
"Running down the street with an axe. That certainly brings back memories. Hey it made that Halloween fun. So I haven't seen much of you during the week. You feeling good?"
For once he was feeling great. He couldn't remember the last time when he'd been in such a good mood. It was as if the stars had suddenly aligned in Renegade's favour. Apart from the small issue of being buried alive, everything was okay. His family was fine at last which made him worry less and left him able to concentrate more on his wrestling. And being a current champion, he couldn't afford to take his eyes of the ball. He wanted to be the person who firmly established the X Core title as a legitimate New Edge belt.
"It's good, I do feel more fresh. Yeah it maybe was the right time to have a week off, but its over now and I gotta get myself ready for this week. Can't be seen slacking especially while I'm holding a belt. Target on my back and all that crap, but yeah I need to start shoring things up, being a little more professional and stuff. I know its not the world title, but still its a championship and as a champion I have standards to uphold and uphold them I shall."
"Man professional is so boring though. I thought you liked a bit of unpredictability. Things are more fun that way aren't they? Like one week, just act different, just do something crazy and unpredictable. Like your opponent this week, just creep them out. Who is it anyway?"
"Yeah Drake Blake his name is. Refers to himself as "Sick" Drake Blake. Honestly he seems like a rather unbalanced individual. Ya know I really should get the petition started to force New Edge to undergo Phsyc evaluations on all roster members. It really would seperate the nut jobs around from the sane people. Ah but then we'd only have about five people on the roster so maybe I've just gotta accept the fact that I have to associate with the lunatics from time to time. Guess it's just a cross I've got to bare. I just hope he doesn't lick or bite or anything, I don't want to catch crazy. Too much crazy in my life. It's quiet now, I like it like this."
"Okay, maybe unpredictable is the wrong thing with this guy. Probably be best to get in and out as quickly as possible. Non title I suppose?"
Non title was a very good thing. Renegade was pleasantly surprised he hadn't been asked to defend the X Core title as of yet, but he knew with another PPV fast approaching, he's probably have a new challenger sooner rather than later and with a new challenger came new challenges to overcome and then came yet another hardcore match which Renegade's healed body wasn't really anticipating all too well.
"Non title yes it is. Which is good for me since I assumed I'd have to defend the X Core title sooner or later. I guess they haven't found anyone yet. What's great about being in New Edge is that people do actually work for their title shots so I'm not going to get a randomer just to make up the numbers. Also means I get to see the challenger before hand so I can at least get some kind of picture of what to expect. It keeps me on my toes and it also gives the challenger some momemtum going into a title match. It makes for a good match"
"Yeah I bet there's a lot of people chomping at the bit for that X Core title. Already have people staking claims and calling you out."
"Its funny I still see it all week after week all this trash talking from everyone about everybody and I think to myself. Fifty percent of those people are going to end up looking like fools. Trash talking and shit may sound cool but when these fools don't back it up it makes them look stupid. Its why I shy away from that stuff. If I don't like someone I'll them but If i have no issue with them and we just happen to have a match then I aint gonna start ripping on them for no reason. I don't see the point in looking foolish, its bad enough losing but losing when you promised the world you win, its damn stupid."
As they walked a cab pulled up behind them. Renegade hailed it down. And to his displeasure it failed to stop and carried on driving.
"Screw this I want some food. Shall we go eat?"
"Fine by me."
They walked on for a few minutes, passing a few more people on their way. Stopping outside a resturant, they noticed a woman sat on a wall outside looking slightly distressed, tears in her eyes. Slightly concerned, he slowly approached her.
"Are you okay love?"
She didn't respond, she just looked ahead vaguely not responding to anything.
"Has something happened?"
Again she didn't respond. Renegade approached nearer. Getting closer into the light, he noticed swelling around her eye, blood on her lip. She was shaking, in a state of panic. Renegade quickly turned to his friend.
"Call an ambulance."
His friend in search of a phone, leaving Renegade with the lady.
"Can you hear me, listen, my name is Rene..... My name is Leo, can you tell me your name please?"
He felt her hands, they were stone cold. He placed his hands on hers, trying to warm her up.
"K.....K....Kate, my name is Kate."
She was talking, that was a good sign."
"Okay Kate, can you tell me what happened to you? Has someone hurt you?"
"Nnn no I'm alright, just a little cold."
She was obviosly lying. Was she trying to defend someone? Did someone do this to her?
"How did you get those bruises? How long have you been out here?"
"Not long, I just needed some air."
Not long, she was freezing, no coat or anything. What was wrong with her? Was she afraid to say?
"Okay then but I'm a little concerned so I'm going to wait here for the ambulance to come for you okay. Get you warmed up and take a look at those bruises. It shouldn't be long okay"
"It's alright I'm fine, I'll be up in a minute so I can go home."
She still looked deeply distressed. The shaking had stopped but she was still remarkably cold. Still not looking at Renegade, staring blankly ahead in the distance. It wasn't a nice sight to behold. This woman was frightened and Renegade didn't like it. Even though he'd had his run ins with his mother in his past, he was still remarkably respectable to women, with the exception on New Edge when it came to fighting women, he wasn't one for seeing women upset. He didn't know her, but he wanted to help.
Sirens in the distance and shortly after the ambulance arrived. Renegade's friend arrived back too. They watched on as the paramedics tended to the woman, seemingly a whole lot better than he did. She seemed more responsive now as she'd warmed up slightly. As they were about to lift her into the back of the ambulance. Renegade turned to his friend.
"Listen, are you okay to go back on your own. I'm going to go with her. Make sure she's okay."
"We don't even know her man just let the paramedics deal with her."
"You know me buddy, I can never resist a damsel in distress, I'll call you later okay."
"Okay man but don't forget you got Ignite to get ready more. "Sick" Drake Blake comes before sick damsels in distress."
Renegade mustered a laugh as he hauled himself into the back of the ambulance as it sped off into the night. Renegade wasn't sure what really made him travel with the lady. Was it just a sight of an upset lady? Or was it him doing the right thing after doing so much bad recently, a small bit of pennance. This lady who he didn't know but had suddenly became an interesting event in his life.
