It's a mild Wednesday afternoon in Detroit, as Alisha and I simply continue our walk down the street, heading to one of the many gyms in the area. It's where we agreed to meet up with my tag team partner "Blitz", so that we could do some training before our tag team match this week, against Jason Scene and Bobby Backdoor.
As such, I'm dressed in a white shirt, black gym pants with white stripes running down both sides and black Nike gym shoes, as well as carrying my Nike gym bag which is coloured in the colours of the Canadian flag and contains my wrestling attire as well as a white gym towel. Alisha on the other hand, is attired in a lime green shirt with a rainbow and a rabbit holding flowers on the front, tight fitting denim jeans and white Converse athletic shoes. A lot more casual than me.
Jacob: Hey babe, do you know where Blitz said the gym was?
Alisha looks at me, nodding with a smile as she remembers the message that Blitz left us last night, informing us of the directions to get to the gym where he wanted to meet us.
Alisha: Yeah. It's just about a mile down the road.
I smile at her, seeing as she's always been much better than me, when it comes to directions and getting to places we need to go. Even when the area is as unfamiliar to us as Detroit is, seeing as we've never been here before.
Jacob: Cool.
Alisha: Yeah.
We keep walking at a reasonable pace, passing numerous people with the majority of them not even taking a single glance at us, seeing as we're still considerably unknown in the wrestling business, despite the fact that it's been about a month since I stepped into the ring for the first time. That's fine though, because it shows that I still have a long way to go, before I become a big star.
"It's all about making the most impact you possibly can in the ring. That way, people will be forced to know who you are,' I think to myself, knowing that's definitely the case. Just like anything in life, you can't expect to be successful right away inside of the wrestling ring. I then let out a soft sigh, as Alisha turns and looks at me.
Alisha: Everything okay hun?
Jacob: Yeah, everything's fine. Just doing some thinking.
Alisha: Ah, all right. You know you can tell me if something's bothering you.
I nod at her. She knows how much I trust her with issues that are going on in my life, and that has been evident in the past when her and I have had late-night conversations about different topics. It even happened this week on Monday, when we talked until the early hours of the morning about personal issues and the struggles of being a professional wrestler.
Jacob: Yeah, I know baby.
She then smiles, showing me just how trusting she is in nature, as I smile back at her whilst we reach the entrance to the gym. We turn left and push the double doors open, thus allowing us to enter as Blitz glances over from the weights set, where he seemed to be in the midst of doing some reps. He stops doing so and pushes himself up, before making his way over to where we are, as we walk over to the main desk.
Blitz: No need to do that guys. I've already informed them that you were coming to join me.
Turning around, we see him standing there in his gym gear as I smile at Alisha, before tilting my head and smiling at him.
Jacob: Cool. So, what's the plan for today?
Blitz: Well, I've managed to book us the ring, so that we could train with a couple of sparring partners. Gotta get ourselves some practice in before the match against Backdoor and Scene this week, seeing as we've never tagged together before.
I laugh, seeing as he is correct with that statement. All of the past great tag teams worked together as a unit, both in the gym and in the ring. If we want to be like them, we gotta be the same way. He smirks slightly as I place my gym bag down on the floor.
Blitz: Feel free to get changed into different gear if you wish man. We'll get started shortly.
I then nod before bending over and unzipping my bag, searching through it for my wrestling gear and almost throwing a few other things out from the bag in the process. After finding them and extracting them from the bag, I head over to the men's locker room, so that I can go and get changed and ready for this gym session that Blitz has in store for me today.
*5 minutes Later*
I return from the locker room, carrying the clothes that I was wearing before and tossing them into the gym bag. Walking over to where Blitz is standing, I see that he is talking to two men, who look to be muscular in build and at least six foot three in height. He then looks at me, after wrapping his discussion up with the two other men.
Blitz: All right Jacob, these two men will be our sparring partners today. Tony and Matt.
I look at the man on the right first, who Blitz had pointed out as being Tony. He's wearing a black muscle shirt, black shorts and black Nike gym shoes. Turning over to the left, I see that Matt's wearing the same sort of gear, but he's dressed in white instead of black.
Jacob: Hey Matt & Tony.
Matt: Hey
Tony: Hey
I then turn to Blitz, who by now has begun to make his way over to the doors which have "Wrestling Room" written in white text atop of them. He looks back at us, and motions for us to come join him so we begin to walk with me leading and Tony & Matt not far behind.
"Hopefully I learn some tricks that will come in handy from this," I think to myself, seeing as I understand why we're doing this training session, but don't know how useful it'll be until we actually step into the ring together as a team and face Backdoor and Scene.
Heading into the room, I look around and see all the wrestling related pictures that are hanging off the walls and smile to myself, before thinking "Maybe I can become like them someday", before looking up and seeing that Matt & Tony are already standing in the ring, as is Blitz. I then hurry over to the ring and jump up onto the apron, looking at Blitz for a moment before stepping through the ropes.
It's then that it hits me. The fact that one of the two men that I'm facing this week, is Canadian wrestling legend Jason Scene. A man I remember watching on the television and idolizing growing up, wishing that I could be like him. He's one of the main reasons that I started wrestling in the first place, so to come up against him is an awe-inspiring moment.
I am quickly forced to snap back into reality though, when Tony almost runs through me with a double axe handle that causes me to fall hard onto the mat below. I stumble to get to my feet, only for Tony to return and this time knock me down with a running shoulderblock. I slowly and cautiously stand up, getting myself into a defensive sort of stance and looking at Tony to try and measure his next move when I start to vision him as Scene.
Not a good thing to do, when you're meant to be in the middle of an important sparring session.
As such, I find myself soon doubled over in pain, courtesy of a toe kick by Tony, who then grabs me by the hair and begins to make his way over to his corner. Hearing the slapping of the hand between Tony & Matt, I try to push myself away but am unable to, as Matt knees me in the gut at the same time Tony releases me, causing me to merely drop to my knees and place my hands on my stomach as I gasp for air.
I then feel his arms wrap around my body, in some sort of inverted bearhug as I start swinging elbows back at him, mostly missing but with a few solidly connecting. Enough to make him loosen his grip and allow me to mule kick him and create some separation. Advancing towards Blitz in the hope of tagging him in to take a breather and recover, I start to think about how I'm going to approach facing the man I idolized inside of the ring at the NEW five year event.
Unfortunately, by doing that I allowed Matt to recover and take me down with a diving spear, before he gets me in the full mount position and starts raining down the blows. A lot of them connect with my face, despite my best efforts to try and block them until I manage to stop one and force him off me with a straight jab.
That only serves to incense Matt, as he hoists me up into the air, only to throw me like a ragdoll and send me crashing chest-first onto the mat, a move which takes my breath away. He stomps on my back, causing pain to run up and down my body as I attempt to head to the ropes in order to pull myself up. After about five more stomps, Matt surprisingly lets me do so and I look to the corner where Blitz is supposed to be, noticing that he is making his way over to me.
Blitz: Jacob, you gotta keep your eyes on the ball and your head in the game. Remember what happened to me at Kamikaze? I took my eyes off the ball for a single second and Jesse took advantage and beat me. I know you idolized Scene, but he's the enemy this week and you have to retain focus and find a way to beat the man. Show him that you're the future just like he is now the past.
I then nod at Blitz, understanding and remembering what he said, before managing to hit a charing Matt with a low dropkick and forcing him to his knees. I then apply a headlock on him and smile, before dropping down with a snap DDT.
Blitz: That's a start. Now you have to continue with it.
I then feel the aggression rising inside of me, as I dropkick a now standing Matt and bounce off the ropes, coming back with an athletic forward roll into senton combination, which makes me smile. Standing, I make my way to Blitz and tag him in, allowing him to hit a violent running lariat style of move to Matt who was struggling to stand up at the time.
"I can't let Scene get to me. I can't let him win," I quietly whisper to myself, as Blitz nails Matt with a violent looking Ganso bomb, as Tony jumps into the ring to try and attack him. Instincts start to kick into action at this point and I jump over the ropes and charge at Tony, managing to hit him with a spinning heel kick before locking in the Canadian Honor, as Blitz hits the goal line stand on Matt, covering him for the mock pin as Tony taps out. Releasing the hold and with Blitz's help, I stand and smile at him.
Jacob: Is that what you wanted?
Blitz: Yeah, that's the Jacob I want to see this week, when we step into the ring. You can't allow yourself to be caught up in the fact you're facing someone that inspired you. You have to treat him, just like everyone else that you step into the ring against.
Jacob: All right man, I promise you that I'll be fully focused on the task of winning this week. After all, we have to let the rest of NEW know that we're not going to be backing down from anybody that gets in our way.
Blitz: Exactly.
We then walk over to the ropes, stepping through them and going to leave as Blitz turns around, saying "Thanks for helping us guys" to Tony and Matt who put their thumbs in their air, as a way of saying "No problems". Heading back through the door, I look over to where Alisha is standing and seeing that she has a smile on her face. She then makes her way over to us.
Alisha: I managed to get us three hockey tickets for tonight.
I look at her and smile, as I know why she got three instead of the two she usually gets when we go to the hockey together.
Jacob: Blitz, do you want to come to the hockey tonight with us? It'd be great just to get some relaxation and time away from all the stress.
Blitz: Sure. Mind you, I don't know the rules, so you'll have to explain them to me.
I slightly laugh, as I slap him on the back in a friendly manner as we head back toward where my gym bag is.
Jacob Sure thing man.
He then smiles, as I pull out my other clothes from the gym bag and prepare to get changed again.
This week, is our chance to make a statement.
You better believe we will.
Right now, it's just about having fun.
