Valora Walked out of the office, Kronin’s personal bathroom door swinging open just as the office door closed. “Heard that?” Kronin asked as Ryan shut the bathroom door behind him, straightened his suit jacket and poured himself a drink before taking a seat on the couch, crossing his right leg over the left.
“I did.” Ryan said before taking a sip of the drink. “Got a nice pair of balls on her that one does!” Ryan half smirked as he set the drink down on the end table.
“That she does, but she did say something that peaked my interest Ryan.” Kronin leaned back in his chair and interlocked his fingers in his hands. “How are you trying to inure Rob Riot?” Kronin’s question was frank and to the point, Ryan always respected that about the man.
“I simply took advantage of a financial situation that has proven to be rather beneficial to me.” Ryan smirked as he grabbed the drink, swirled it in the glass and took a sip. “But there is no need to worry about Riot getting hurt, my deal has already run its course, and besides my sources tell me that the situation those two are in will be ending rather soon.”
Kronin leaned forward in the chair and stared at Ryan hard. “What do you know?” Kronin asked with a growning interest.
“About what?” Ryan teased in response.
“Don’t play that game with me.” A smile graced Kronin’s face.
“I know that Valora is not who she claims to be, but then anyone with half a brain is aware of that.” Ryan sipped his drink and set it back down. “Truth is Kronin, there are some people in the NEW playing dangerous games, and playing them with people who know how to play them better.” Ryan smiled wide as he stood up and wiped the front of his jacket.
“You are dodging my question.” Responded Kronin.
“Indeed I am.” Ryan winked as he moved to the door. “It is probably better for you to not know some of the things that go on.” Ryan pulled the door open and turned back to his long time friend.
“Where are you going?” Kronin asked.
“I have a meeting with a psychologist.” Ryan gave Kronin one more smile and exited the office, shutting the door behind him, leaving Kronin sitting at his desk smiling and shaking his head.
More than an hour later Valora was exiting Dr. Lauren’s office, and as she did so she passed right by Ryan Elias who sat un becoming in jeans and a pull over hoodie sweater in the waiting room. Ryan watched as Valora strode defiantly strong out of the building and off to her next destination. Wearing a subtle smile, Ryan strode to the office door, pushed it open and walked in.
“Oh my!” Dr. Lauren jumped as Ryan made his way in. “You startled me good.” She replied.
“I take it she bought it?” Ryan asked casually as he inspected the room.
“Quite the idea you had to take down some of my training and education certificates Mr. Elias.” Dr. Lauren was already hanging her stuff back up on the wall. “She clearly has a complex, and must feel like she is the smartest one in the room, and this set up definitely gave me a chance to talk to her with some of her guard down.” Dr. Lauren crossed the room and took a seat.
“And the second appointment is all set?” Ryan asked as he played with an apple paperweight that sat upon Dr. Lauren’s desk.
“All set, now let me ask you a question Mr. Elias.” Dr. Lauren paused for a moment. “What motivates you?”
“Nice try.” Ryan winked at the woman, set the paperweight down and moved for the door.
“Classic avoidance.” Dr. Lauren said as Ryan pulled the door open.
“Very classic.” Ryan turned back, winked and made his way out of the door, shutting it behind him. Before leaving Ryan slipped into the bathroom, pulled off the hoodie and jeans, revealing his well-tailored suit underneath. He wiped the creases out and smiled before tossing the hoodie and pants into a nearby trash can.
From there Ryan made his way out of the bathroom and to the exit of the building. Just as he exited the building, Ryan’s phone began to ring. He glanced down, saw the familiar home image as the phone rang. “Yes Windsor?” Ryan asked as he put the phone to his ear.
“Will you be home for lunch sir?” Windsor asked.
“Not today.” Ryan continued walking down the sidewalk. “Did my contact with the NSA ever get back to me?” Coming to a stop, Ryan glanced across the road to see someone intently watching him while trying to hide it by eating a bagel and reading the paper.
“I will text you the address sir.” Windsor casually replied. “If there is anything else sir?”
“No, that’s perfect Windsor.” Ryan ended the call and slipped the phone into his jacket. Picking up his feet, Ryan started walking again and took the next left down an alley. He moved quickly at a hard walk and ducked into a doorway, pushing the door open and slipping through it. There he waited watching through a peephole as the man from across the street made his way down the alley, his head darting around and eyes searching for something.
As the man came to a stop, Ryan pulled the door pen and burst from it like a bolt of lightning, striking the man in the side of the face and sending him falling face first to the ground. Stealing a quick glance over his right shoulder Ryan made sure the area was clear of prying eyes and dragged the man behind a dumpster, there he sat the man up and roused him with a slap to the face.
“Who are you?” Ryan casually asked, kneeling down, his hands on his knees.
“No one!” Came the man’s reply.
“If that were true you wouldn’t be following me, and doing a damn terrible job of it.” Ryan leaned in close, his jacket opening up a bit revealing the gun holstered in the shoulder harness under it. “Who is paying you?” He asked, his face only a few inches away from the man’s.
“May I?” The man motioned to his pocket, and Ryan simply nodded and smiled as he withdrew a bit. Reaching into his pocket the man pulled out an ID and handed it to Ryan. Casually Ryan flipped it open and a smile graced his face.
“So what does the FBI want with me?” He casually asked.
“Where you got your intel.” Sitting up, the man wiped his jaw and popped his ears. “You outed someone impersonating an FBI agent, someone doing it so well that we didn’t even know it was happening, and we want to know how you got that information.”
Ryan simply smiled as he stood up and fixed his jacket. “If I told you my connections, then they wouldn’t give me the information I need when I need it. How about you just say thank you, and actually try to catch the woman who did such a great job of deceiving you.”
“Or I could just arrest you and bring you in!” The man defiantly responded.
“If you were going to do that, I wouldn’t be still standing here.” Ryan winked and turned away from the man, disappearing down the alley. Exiting out of the alley, Ryan pulled his phone from his jacket and checked the address, a smile gracing his face as he put it back and he started off down the sidewalk.
Thirty minutes later Ryan came to a stop outside of a shitty old downtown apartment building. He check the address against his phone and made his way up the steps. The front door was a buzzer door requiring either a code, or someone inside to buzz you in. Ryan casually reached out and ran his hand up and down all the buzzers until the door finally buzzed open and he stepped in.
Five minutes later Ryan was at the door of the apartment he had been texted the address of. He put his ear to the door and listened, gaining a curious look from a neighbor down the hall. Ryan waved the old woman off and pulled away from the door. Twisting the knob, the door swung open and Elias couldn’t help but laugh inside at the idea that they left the door open.
Inside the aroma of rotting food and the sounds of someone listening to music filled the air. Ryan made his way around the entry way and found two men sitting at computers laughing and banging away at their keyboards. “Man I am owning this shit!” Malloy yelled. He was a skinny white male with long blonde hair, his friend a somewhat heavy set guy who no doubt was the meat of the operation.
“Fuck yeah Malloy, that’s greater rift level 45 we just cleared!” Ralphie through his hands up in the air and turned to see Ryan Elias standing with his gun out staring at the two men. “Wholly Shit!” Ralphie yelled, falling out of his chair, and Malloy doing the same as he spun around.
“So two assholes living at this address have been billing on demand to my dish service provider.” Ryan casually stated, the gun tapping the side of his hip. Both men scrambled to get up and were shaking with fear as they stood next to each other.
“I…um…” Malloy tried to talk but the words bound up in his throat.
“Tell me how you did it?” Ryan asked as he motioned for both men to move to the nearby computer with his weapon. Both men followed suit, Malloy slipping into his chair as he turned it upright.
“It’s quite simple to be honest.” Malloy stated as he began to mash on the keyboard and a series of windows popped up. “You see everything nowadays is connected to the internet, so if you have the right computer you can access nearly anything.”
“Hell if you have the right programs on a phone you can do it.” Ralphie chimed in.
“Yes you can use a phone, thank you Ralphie for interrupting!” Malloy continued banging on the keyboard, his fingers moving lightning quick. “See there it is, your account and what we used to get access to it and bill you for our…um…viewing pleasure.”
“I wouldn’t call animated porn viewing pleasure.” Ralphie chimed in.
“Thank you Ralphie!” Malloy barked back. “You aren’t going to like kill us are you?” Malloy asked, a shake in his voice.
“Haven’t decided yet.” Elias casually responded. “What can you do for me?”
“What do you need?” Malloy asked.
Ryan pulled a picture from his jacket and tossed it on the keyboard. “This woman, I want everything you can find on her.”
Malloy looked down at the image of Valora and smiled. “Got a name?” He asked.
“Flip it over.” Ryan responded.
Flipping the image over Malloy found a name and DOB on the back. He smiled wide and turned back to look at Ryan. “What’s in it for us?” He asked.
“You get to live!” Ryan said rather matter of factly.
“OH!” Came Ralphie’s response.
“She’s resourceful and I wouldn’t be surprised if she realized you two idiots were looking into her, do you think you can handle that kind of heat?” Ryan holstered his weapon as he asked.
“Man it’s like taking out a level 21 greater rift in Diablo III.” Malloy replied. Ryan just stared at him blankly in response. “That’s a yes.” Malloy finally stated.
“She comes to you, you tell me. You feed me bad intel, I will make sure your computer using days are a thing of the past, are we clear?” Ryan stared hard into Malloy’s eyes as he asked the question.
“Yes.” Malloy barely got the words out.
“Are we clear?” Ryan’s eyes moved to Ralphie.
“Yeah man be cool.” Ralphie replied his hands up in the air.
“Good, I’ll be in contact.” Turning on his heal Ryan grabbed a comic book off the nearby table and looked at it. “Oh, and fix my god damn dish provider bill.” Both men nodded but Ryan was already gone, slipping out of the door and making his way out of the building.
Valora was proving to be more cunning, cleverer, and downright better than he had imagined at hiding. But Ryan was a resourceful man, a clever man, and he was going to get all he needed on the woman before they met at Demented, even if it meant to loser nerds who hacked his dish service provider had to be in the cross hairs. One thing was for sure, Ryan was more focused on Valora than she seemed to be on him, and that was something that made him smile.
