The autograph signing was finally nearing its end, and in some ways I was relieved. I loved meeting fans, but I was exhausted. I had just wrestled five matches in two nights at my other promotion and then made the overnight flight from Seattle Washington to St.Louis to be here for the event. I was exhausted. And I had plans for the night with Tegan and Jimmy Abel.
The last person in line was a teenage girl. As she approached me she had the biggest smile on her face.
Fan: "Oh my god, I love you so much Sasha! This is a dream come true."
Almost in the amount of time it took this young girl to say the words, I had regurgitated them over and over in my head multiple times. Here, was a young woman who was saying she loved me? I've only been around for a little over a month. Wow. I love it.
Sasha Foote: "Thank you that support means a lot to me. I love you too."
I offered a smile and held my silver sharpie as she handed me an 8x10 to sign.
Sasha Foote: "What's your name sweetheart?" I asked, preparing to make it out to her personally.
Fan: "My name is Diane. Diane Looper. I've seen all of your matches so far. I think its so cool to have a woman who really stands up and represents us the way you do. I see so many other women who parade their body around, and, that's fine and all I guess, but I prefer someone like you who actually works to make a name for herself. I want to be just like you."
Sasha Foote: "You were talking about Blair Buchanan with the parading their body around thing, right?"
I laughed and made the autograph out for Diane, handing it back to her. I could see the tears in her eyes, so I stood up and opened my arms.
Sasha Foote: "Aww no don't cry please. If you cry, I'm going to start crying and when I cry that's not good"
I laughed as I wrapped my arms around the fan. For someone who had to be around 16 she had a strong grip. I pulled away and looked her in the eyes, again offering a smile.
Sasha Foote: "It was very nice to meet you Diane. Since you were the last one in line, you can have my sharpie if you want it?"
I picked the sharpie up and handed to her. She took the souvenir and quickly tucked it into her bag.
Fan (Diane): "Can I ask you another question?"
Sasha Foote: "Sure, what's up?"
Diane: "I follow you and a lot of the other wrestlers on twitter, and I saw a big debate you guys were in about an upcoming match. Your boss threatened to fire you. Is that really going to happen?"
Wow, I never thought too much about everything on twitter before. It was one of those things that happened and then it was over. But something like this could have an impact on the fans. I needed to be more careful about what I put out there.
Sasha Foote: "No, its not. That was something that probably should have been discussed in private. I'm sorry if it worried you, but no, I'm not going anywhere. I felt strongly about something and so did my boss and we had a little conflict. Probably something we shouldn't have been tweeting about."
Diane: "Well, thanks for the wonderful experience. You're my favorite. Keep kicking butt and don't let the doubters knock you down."
I smiled as she walked away, but I wasn't happy. The fact that one of my fans had to question me about an argument I had with Jesse, and had to worry over me losing my job was too much. I walked back to where everyone else was getting their things together after the signing. Across the room I saw a woman who had mentored me a little before, Carli Kenner. I waved to her and caught her attention.
Carli was approaching me and I had the urge to punch something. I went to swing and hit the wall, in front of everyone but Carli grabbed my arm just in time.
Carli Kenner: "Hey now, somebody needs to take a chill pill I see."
Sasha Foote: "Can I talk to you? Outside please?"
Carli looked around the room at the other wrestlers and personnel before nodding and heading towards the exit. I followed, and as soon as the door opened and we stepped out into the sunny day in St.Louis, I let out a scream. Frustration had gotten the better of me and I needed a release.
Carli Kenner: "Okay first you were punching, and now you're screaming. I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say something is bothering you. What's going on?"
I could feel the light breeze on my skin and it was calming, just enough to keep me from going completely crazy. I sat down on a curb outside of the building and Carli joined me. I felt like I could trust her.
Sasha Foote: "I just saw one of my fans, in tears, asking me if I was going to get fired because of the blow up between Jesse and I on twitter. Do you know how that felt? Seeing someone who looked up to me, so close to crying because I almost lost my job. Who does Jesse think he is?"
Carli Kenner: "Sash, I'm going to be honest because I think you would respect that. Jesse is the owner of New Edge and can pretty much do any darn thing he wants to. He can talk to you how he wants, he can make whatever matches he wants, and he won't lose any sleep over it. To be fair, he's a genuine man. He's fair. I know how you feel. You're young, you have a bit of a temper."
I gave her a death stare. This wasn't helping.
Carli Kenner: "Don't look at me like that, you know you do. Having a temper isn't a bad thing, but losing it in public or on social media can be. Jesse brought me in to help with the new talent, so I'm always here."
Sasha Foote: "Just because he's the owner doesn't mean he can threaten to fire me because I want one night off."
Carli Kenner: "Actually, he can. You were already signed to compete in a pretty anticipated match that night. You backing out means some of the people who might have bought tickets to see your match could potentially ask for a refund. Losing money and failing to provide something that was promised isn't the business Jesse is in, he's in the business of making the fans happy."
In a way I knew she was right, but I still didn't want to hear it. I rolled my eyes and turned my head away to pretend I was tuning her out.
Carli Kenner: "You can roll your eyes all you want but that won't change anything. Once you sign a contract, you do what they ask you to do. You might be a rookie who is hot now with a name and a lot of eyes on you, but that could all be taken away. Look at what happened with me. When I suffered my injury I was just like you. I was full of myself but I had every reason to be. I was the new girl on the block, taking the wrestling world by storm. But after the injury, that was it. All of those fans, they moved on and found somebody else to cheer for. Everyone that was buying my merchandise, they bought someone elses. The titles I thought I was going to be fighting for, I was sitting at home watching others fight for it. The business moves on with or without you."
I glanced back at her before looking back at my legs, staring at the pink Nikes I was wearing.
Sasha Foote: "But there's a difference, no offense between a career ending injury or being let go because of a dispute with my boss. If Jesse fired me tomorrow I could find work in another promotion."
Carli Kenner: "That isn't a guarantee Sasha. A dispute that went public like the one you had with Jesse could turn off potential business partners. Think about this, New Edge has made you into a star. If you seem hard to work with on a professional level, other companies may not take the risk of signing you."
Sasha Foote: "But I didn't do anything wrong. I said I would prefer not to be included on an event where someone is going to get hung in order to lose the match. That isn't wrestling, that's barbaric. If I wouldn't let my daughter watch it, I'd rather not take part in it. It's not about me being in the match or me at all really, its about standing up for what I believe in. That has no place in New Edge."
Carli Kenner: "There's nothing wrong with standing up for what you believe in, but don't risk your job for it. You have a young daughter, right?"
At the mention of my daughter I could feel my lips stretching across my face, forming a smile.
Sasha Foote: "I do, Brittany. She's four years old. She's my everything. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for her."
Carli Kenner: "Then I know you want to give her the best future possible. You can do that working for New Edge. Since being brought in as a mentor to the younger wrestlers, I've done my research on the company. They've been around for years. Most companies nowadays only make it a few months. Don't throw this opportunity away. Take whatever frustration you have, bottle it up, and save it for Ignite for your tag match with Seth against Blair and Chris Styles."
Sasha Foote: "Yeah, you're right. I really don't like them. Blair just irks my nerves. I know she's done a lot in New Edge and I can't argue that, but her attitude stinks. She thinks she's better than everyone and she's really not."
I opened my left palm and balled my right fist up and pressed it against my left palm, rubbing it around in circles.
Sasha Foote: "She's one of the people saying I'm nothing, or that I'm a rookie who needs to shut my mouth and its frustrating. Then she gets on twitter and talks about the match like this is nothing to her. She's basically saying the match against Seth and I is a walk in the park because of who we are and because we don't stand a chance. You have no idea how that makes me feel."
Carli Kenner: "Well I'm here to listen. How does it make you feel Sasha? Does it motivate you to want to rip her face off in the ring?"
Sasha Foote: "More than that. I want to knock her ugly little head off her shoulders completely."
We shared a laugh together. It felt good to be able to laugh after the last few days.
Sasha Foote: "Blair needs to realize she's not automatically better than Seth and I just because she's been here longer. She also needs to learn to respect me not only as a person, but as a wrestler in the ring. There's only so many times someone can say I haven't had enough matches to be taken seriously, or to earn my spot. I have fanbases from two different companies, the fans are backing me up and they wouldn't get behind me if I wasn't worth it. Right?"
Carli Kenner: "That's true, and I see the fire you have, but not everyone is going to. Or some people will say things to push your buttons. Blair Buchanan is an amazing wrestler. Don't let what she says on social media or on her video's get to you so much that they throw you off focus. That's probably part of her gameplan."
Sasha Foote: "Well maybe she should spend more time on a better gameplan and less time being easy on social media. A week or two ago I think I read the most cringeworthy stuff ever when she was begging Chris Styles to come over. She was sending him pictures, revealing pictures of herself to gain his attention. She didn't text them, she tweeted them because she wanted attention. And everyone calls me the attention whore?"
Carli Kenner: "I actually remember that night because I was hanging out with Chris. He left in a hurry and said his friend needed him. That friend ended up being Blair. Not a big deal, I just let it go."
Sasha Foote: "She's basically everything I'm against with women's wrestling today. I know she's talented, but when she starts posting pictures like that and tweeting for the world to see, begging a guy to come screw her basically, it makes all of us look bad. We have to fight hard as it is to be able to be brought up in conversation with the men in wrestling, and her past achievements mean nothing when she does that kind of stuff."
Carli Kenner: "She's still someone to take seriously inside of the ring, Sasha. She's not a damsel and honestly she's as good as most of the men in New Edge or wrestling in general. If you want to beat them, I think you should focus on Chris. I worked out with him and he's quick, I see why they call him the cheetah, but I think you can isolate him."
Sasha Foote: "You mean skunk boy Styles?" I asked, giggling.
Sasha Foote: "He's new too...actually can you take my phone and record me? I want to say something to Chris and Blair."
Carli Kenner: "Sure, let me see your phone girl."
Sasha pulls her phone out and hands it to Carli, which TRANSITIONS US TO ON CAMERA
I smiled as the phone was pointed at me, I had a few things I wanted to get off my chest about this upcoming tag team match.
Sasha Foote: "On April 21st I compete in my 3rd match in New Edge. This is a match I'm super excited about because I get the opportunity to team with my boyfriend, Seth Lawless. Typically I wouldn't want a tag team match, I prefer to win or lose on my own. I don't like depending on anyone to hold their weight, I want it all on me. I can handle the pressure. But its different with Seth.
Seth is somebody who I truly trust inside the ring and out. From almost the day I stepped foot in New Edge, Seth has been my training partner. I was known almost exclusively for my striking at one point but in just a few weeks I've transformed into a more complete wrestler, thanks to Seth's guidance. If there was one person in this company I would feel comfortable going to war with, it would be Seth Lawless.
We're facing another couple, well, I think they're a couple. Its hard to tell with Blair sometimes. Seems like she'll flash her stuff for anyone who will give her an eye. Blair, I have news for you, regardless of what you've accomplished in the ring, the antics you pull not only on twitter, but even at the shows is ridiculous. Watch Demented if you need a refresher everybody."
I rolled my eyes.
Sasha Foote: "The seduction techniques won't do anything for you in this tag team match. One, because I obviously won't be phased by it, and two, neither will Seth. We are showing up to actually wrestle, you know, doing our jobs. What you've done in the past is great, but it doesn't mean a thing when the bell rings on the 21st. Just as you would say what I've done here against two veterans means nothing.
And Skunk Boy Styles? I commend you for overcoming your demons in your personal life. It takes a big person to realize they have a problem and actually do something about it. But Chris, you have a different PROBLEM on your hands at Ignite and that problem is me, Sasha Foote.
You think its cute to call me Nose Job Sasha? We'll see how funny it is when I'm punching your nose through the rest of your face. I figure you will probably try and hide behind Blair because honestly we all know who wears the pants in that relationship but trust me, that won't work. You wanted this match, you've got it. I'm not upset that you picked Johnny to beat me at Demented, which you were wrong in by the way. I'm not even upset that you came up with an immature nickname for me, which by the way, the nickname I came up with for you might be mature, but at least its marketable.
What I'm most upset about is the fact that you petitioned everyone to see if I was a 'whiner'. I'm NOT a whiner. Since when does actually wanting respect when you work hard to earn it constitute being called a whiner? I show up to work whenever I have anything planned. For instance I wrestled on the 15th and 16th in Seattle, a total of 5 matches but still made sure I was back here today in time to meet my New Edge requirements. I bust my ass, and for you to look for a way to get more of my peers to look down on me, it pisses me off.
But this isn't a singles match or a handicap match so it won't just be me that you two have to worry about, Seth is also prepared for this match.
Another reason I see us winning this match is because we have better chemistry in the ring than you two do. How do I know this? Because I know the hours Seth and I put in daily in the gym. Sometimes its preparing me for my matches, sometimes preparing him for his, but either way we know how each other moves inside the ring. I know you two might have more chemistry outside the ring than most but that doesn't count when the bell rings.
The importance of in-ring chemistry can't be overlooked when it comes to this match. Not only do Seth and I want to protect each other because of how much we care about each other as people, but we both want to be successful here. This is Seth's first match here, his first chance to show everyone what he's got and I know he's ready for this.
And if you think I'm not ready, take a lot at my track record. I've come into every match prepared, and this will be no different. I'm not a stranger to competing against someone with more experience, I'm looking at you Blair. I'm not afraid of someone who is a rookie like me, I'm looking at you Chris. I'm not afraid of anyone period.
When the bell rings on the 21st, one thing is for certain, there's going to be a PROBLEM for the two people standing across from Seth and I. A Lawless Problem."
I motion for Carli to stop the recording, ending the feed.
