I'm a whisper lost upon wind
I'm the ember that'll burn you down
I'm the water that'll drown you
I'm a star that's just a black hole now
I'm a terrifying danger
I'm a fruit decaying on the ground
I'm a swallower of anger
I'm the tree that falls and makes no sound
I make no sound
The hubris of some is astounding. I made no secret of my intent since returning to the NEW, my whole goal, the sole purpose of my return is to take down Jesse Styles, and for months he has danced around me, involving himself in my affairs. I told him not to show up, told the world what would happen if he did, but he has no humility, and so he found out what everyone who has doubted me in the past has found. Roger doesn’t lie. I told everyone, I told Jesse, and I told Ailyn, that Jesse would get what was coming, that she would get what was coming, and that the narrative has changed.
Well everyone, here we are, Jesse ate the Wright stuff, Ailyn ate the Wright Stuff, and Roger Wright walked away from the show before he gets to have Jesse in the ring, with a win. Yes Jesse got the upper hand on me for a while, but that’s what separates me from Jesse, he can’t adapt, he can’t overcome, instead he is a gerbil in a wheel just spinning away going nowhere but wearing himself out. I adapt, I overcome, I learn, that’s why I am the best this company has ever seen, that’s why I have stood at the top of the mountain and been unstoppable, because I learn from the mistakes, I learn how you act.
People Like Jesse and Iser, and no doubt their mystery partner, see this industry as a punch first and ask questions later. That style can get you to the top, but it doesn’t keep you there. There is a reason that Seth has never held a title worth a damn for any amount of time. There is a reason that Jesse has to side with people like Seth and Johnny, because his punch first style has allowed him to get punched back harder over time. Because eventually you run into someone like me, someone who sees the strategy and learns, duck first, then punch back.
But your worst nightmare is that I will teach Abigail, and Andrew what I know, that these two bright shining stars of NEW are going to learn from me, and it won’t just be me that you have to deal with Jesse, it will be us. Because the only thing worse for you than one wrestler that thinks like I do, is to have more than one. Because you and I both know it doesn’t matter who is in your corner. It can be Seth Iser and Jesus Christ for all we care, the one thing we know for sure is that you will have one move, one gameplan, and that is to punch first.
And 'cause if I stand up, I break my bones
And everybody loves to see a fall unfold
Ain't nobody giving up
'Cause nobody gives a fuck
Stand up, and break my bones
Everybody wants what they just can't hold
There's nobody praying for me
Roger sat behind the desk of his home office, his eyes fixated on the fields below, the workers diligently tending to the tasks that needed done. A deep breath escaped his lips and he closed his eyes trying to take in all that was around him. “You okay boss?” Shane asked from the open door as he knocked on it.
“Trying to understand the world Shane.” Roger let go of a long exhale as he spun around to look upon his once closest friend, now turned…well whatever Shane has now become. “What can I do for you?”
“Marie dropped off at school and wanted to know if you needed any of my services before I decided to retire to my room.” Shane looked at the man whom he had called friend but now called boss. He could see something behind the man's eyes, something weighing on him, as it had before so many times before a big match. “Might I offer something?” Shane stepped gingerly forward with a hand raised.
“Depends, what are you offering?” Roger asks, remaining stoic and almost lost in thought.
“I know I wasn’t a great friend, but I never offered you bad advice, I think you can agree with me on that. Might you let me be your ear like I old times?” Shane looked to the floor as he offered his services as he used to in the past.
“Well I certainly do not intend to consult with my psychotic brother about this topic, so why not Shane, one more time, for old times sake.” Roger gives a wave for Shane to go on.
“It seems you have spent quite a lot of time working towards this moment. Months, even years, just as you did with how you took your company back from me. But did you have the feelings you have now, when you took the company back?” Shane takes a seat in the chair across from Roger’s desk.
“No.” Roger replied bluntly.
“So is that because you doubt yourself, or do you doubt who is at your side?” Shane leaned back in the chair, the feeling of familiarity coursing through him.
“The latter, while I know Andrew and Abigail are immensely talented, I am stuck with the fact that they are gatekeepers to me getting what I want. That their performance will holistically affect my ability to achieve my goal, and while it was my idea and while I hand picked them I am still putting my faith in two people who would rather see me gone and out of their way, then help me truly get what I want.” Roger spoke with a passion and sadness.
“So you are afraid.” Shane asked.
“No! It isn’t fear, it’s something else. I have spent days trying to understand how to put it into words, how to describe it. It is anticipation combined with something else, something far more sinister than fear. I don’t know who the mystery man is, no one does, and Jesse has a rogues gallery of allies.” Roger stared hard at Shane as he spoke, the intensity of his feelings manifesting in his eyes.
“You are afraid it is him?” Shane asked, his eyes widening.
“It crossed my mind. It would be a shrewd play if Jesse brought back the one man whom I could never seem to get the better of. But I don’t think Jesse is that smart. If he were, we wouldn’t be sitting here having this conversation.” Roger shook his head as he searched his mind. “It’s something else, there is something much bigger at play here. There has to be a reason he didn’t choose Johnny, or doesn’t want to tell anyone who the partner is. He has something up his sleeve, and the fact I can’t figure it out is what has me angry.”
“Have you talked to Abigail or Andrew? Ask them what their thoughts are?” Shane shifted in the chair getting a bit more comfortable.
“That’s what I need from you Shane, reach out to them, talk to them, speak to them on my behalf. All three of us are going into this match blind to who this mystery partner is for Jesse and Seth.” Roger spun around in his chair and looked back out the window. “I am trusting you on this Shane, do good work.”
“I will.” Shane stood up and left the office as Roger just sat and stared out the window.
“Smells like sex in here!” Matthew spat out as he entered the room just minutes after Shane left. “Did he take it like a woman?” The question ended with Matthew crunching into an apple.
“Do you have a filter?” Came the calm response from Roger.
“Hey, call it as I smell it, and it smells like someone pounded some ass in here. Or maybe it’s musky old paper from the rotting books, I don’t know.” More apple crunching followed Matthew’s words.
“Did you do what I asked?” The words floated with an air of annoyance.
“Yep, what do you think I am some kind of fucking moron, that was the easiest task in the world. Shane could have handled it.” More crunching from the apple followed the words. “Which brings me to my next question, why is Shane getting to talk to Abigail and Andrew? That seems way more important than what you had me do.”
“Because I don’t want Andrew and Abigail pissed off, and you and I both know if you met with them all of this would blow up. I would be stuck in that ring alone. So I gave you the task that I knew you could handle.” Roger spun around to look at Matthew. “You are good at certain things, and Shane is good at other things, I assign you the tasks that I know you will be good at.”
“Okay Don Corlione. Fucking godfather over hear.” Matthew looked off at the wall as if talking to someone. “So do you have an offer for me that I can’t refuse.” Matthew held up the apple and motioned slightly up and down with it.
“Would you just leave?” Roger waved Matthew off.
“Okay, but you will miss me while I am gone.” Matthew skipped out of the office tossing his half eaten apple onto the floor next to the trash.
“Doubt it.” Roger said under his breath.
“YOU WILL!” Matthew yelled from down the hall.
Roger spun back around and looked out the window. He leaned forward and retrieved a small piece of folded paper. He opened it and read it to himself. He closed it and replaced it on the window sill. Standing up he ran his hands through his hair, fixed his shirt and pants and left the office.
I am fungus in the forest
I'm a lizard with a poisoned tongue
I'm the child in the manger
I'm the one who sacrificed his son
Rust is showing on my armor
I am wheezing like an old man done
I'm a product of my anger
I'm the bullet in a loaded gun
Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Or as writers call it, the first Act, the second Act, and the final Act. Many of you out there think this is the final Act for Roger, the end, the crescendo to a great career. But this isn’t Act 3, this isn’t the end. We are just getting started. This roller coaster is already in motion, sparked by the greed and desire of a little man with nothing better to do than take advantage of others.
The only difference this time around is I am not coming for my target alone. This isn’t an unfair fight, this is Roger evening the playing field, Roger finding a way to turn the tables on his target. For over a decade it has been Roger versus the world, but now, I have allies, now I have others whose ideas and wants mirror my own. Things are going to change, and yet still stay the same. Because like all the times before, I am going to come out on top, going to show everyone that heart prevails.
Because that is what all of this is about, it’s about the men and women who break their backs for this industry getting the recognition they deserve. It is about making right the wrongs of the past, and giving all of us who built this company their dues. This isn’t just about Roger versus Jesse, this is about saving NEW from itself, about doing what has needed to be done for far too long.
So at Ignite: War Games, Abigail, Andrew and myself will be fighting for the soul of the NEW. And we are going to save this company from the tyranny that is pervasive in it, we are going to save this company from the foul virus that is corrupting it, and we are going to cleanse this company of the pervasive disease that is threatening to control it.
If I stand up, I break my bones
Everybody loves to see a fall unfold
Ain't nobody giving up
'Cause nobody gives a fuck
Stand up, break my bones
Everybody wants what they just can't hold
There's nobody praying for me
